Partindo do pressuposto de que o discurso de educadores representa uma significativa refêrencia no processo de constituição profissional, o trabalho pretendeu investigar as concepções de professores, seus posicionamentos, graus de consciência sobre a sua condição docente e posturas pedagógicas em face do desafio que é a alfabetização. Abordando-se em dois momentos de formação - alunos concluintes do Curso Normal de Nível Médio e professores de 1® série do Ensino Fundamental da rede pública - foram colhidos quarenta depoimentos em três eixos básicos de investigação: "a escolaridade do professor"; "a constituição dele como leitor e escritor" e "as suas concepções sobre a criança de 6/7 anos e sobre o ensino da língua escrita". Um estudo de tal natureza merece especial consideração pelo momento histórico da educação brasileira que, fazendo um balanço sobre as mais recenes contribuições teóricas (inclusive no que diz respeito à alfabetização e ao letramento), discute novas alternativas de formação docente. Suas conclusões permitem: 1) confirmar a hipótese de que os percursos de formação são singulares e multifacetados; 2) situar o Curso Normal de Nível Médio como legítimo espaço para a formação de conceitos acerca do ensino-aprendizagem da língua escrita e 3) compreender a assimilação parcial e fragmentada dos professores acerca do processo de ensino-aprendizagem e, particularmente, da alfabetização.
