Excerpt from A Handbook of Virginia In a section where hospitality for centuries has been one of the dominant characteristics of the people, it is not surprising that Virginia's new comers, once settled within her borders, find them selves comfortably established for life. Yet the satisfaction felt in their changed sphere by these strangers is due to something more than the cordial attitude of the native people. Excerpt from Hand-Book of Virginia The present publication falls far short of the standard I have set up. And but that from various causes I have been delayed in getting it out far beyond the time expected, I would rewrite the greater part and try to make it conform more nearly to my ideal. Excerpt from School History of Virginia A very practical difficulty in the preparation of a text book on history exists in the fact that the length of the school session varies so widely in different locali ties. To meet, as far as it is possible to do, the demands of the school with a full nine months session, as well as the school with a six months session, with a single book, the School History has been so arranged that sections can be omitted without destroying the story as a whole. It is unnecessary to say that. Omissions should not be made unless necessary, but in view of actual difficulties, the text can be shortened to suit the individual school. Excerpt from Old Virginia Before introducing to the reader, to the English reader at any rate, so many old friends and well remembered scenes from Virginian life, it seems to me that it would be not wholly amiss to give some slight historical account of the Old Dominion itself. I am perfectly aware of a certain incongruity in prefacing sketches of so light a character with anything in the shape of a historical essay. An author, however, may be allowed perhaps some license in this particular so long as he distinctly labels such a chapter with an unmistakable title. For no reader of a light work, I take it, considers himself bound to read the intro duction. And that there is perhaps even less occa sion than usual in this case, so far as the continuity of this little book is concerned, I will frankly admit. Having thus, I trust, made my peace with those who have no curiosity whatever regarding the past history of Virginia, I will remind those who have that this. Excerpt from Memories of a Long Life in Virginia I am now in my eightieth year, health delicate, and nearly blind, but my friends have urged me to write some of my early recollections. I have not kept my letters or written a diary, so I must depend on my memory, and things I have heard from others, principally from my father and mother.
