Carleton's Stories of Irish Life (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Carleton's Stories of Irish Life I have written many works on Irish life, and up to the present day the man has never lived who could lay his finger on any passage of my writings, and say, That is false.' Truth is something more than a verbal or factual accuracy, and it is never his accuracy that is in question. In reading through the mass of his many works on Irish life, the bewilderment lies, not in any falsity (his knowledge was too intimate for that), but in the changing standpoints from which he told his truth, in his progress round the many possible stand points, and the curious aspect the standpoint of to-day suddenly came to wear when viewed from the standpoint of to-morrow. Tales of Irish Life (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Tales of Irish Life The following Tales, with others, were written many years ago, before I became a resident of Hongkong, and when I had more leisure to devote to literary pursuits than I have since had; they were all, however, written more or less hurriedly in fact, during intervals between the hours of professional duty, usually devoted to exercise and relaxation. All of them, save The Story of an Orange Lodge, appeared from time to time in periodicals of the day. The story named was published in a separate volume in 1864; my object in writing it being, to decry the Orange Confederation, which I then thought, and still consider, a senseless and mischievous organization, alike disgraceful to its members as to Ireland. Conscious as I am of all their faults and 1mper fections, I have reproduced some of these tales in this volume, for private circulation only: they serve to recall younger and happier days, and should their perusal afford the reader a small share of the pleasure their production has given me, I shall be well repaid for my trouble. Irish Life and Character (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Irish Life and Character I hope I have achieved the object which I have had in view in writing this book, namely, to give a clear, full and faithful picture of Irish life and character, illustrated by anecdotes and by my own recollections and experiences during a twelve years' connection with Irish journalism. Hitherto no attempt has been made to do for Ireland what Dean Ramsay, in his ever popular Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character, has done so well for Scotland. There is no complete collection of real, genuine Irish anecdotes which throw light on the character, customs, manners, and ways of thought of the Irish people. The Lighter Side of Irish Life (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from The Lighter Side of Irish Life Thus a mythical Irishman has come into be ing, a sentimentalist at heart, a creature of ir responsible gaiety, of singular and irresistible charm of manner, of spontaneous brilliance, a light lover of every pretty woman, or in cases where he happens himself to be a woman, a careless winner of the hearts of men. It is small wonder that the Irish are popular with writers of fiction. We supply for the novelist a long felt want, and are fitted to play In his stories just those parts which throw into the strongest relief the stable worthiness of the ideal, and, I fear, equally mythical, Englishman. The reader of contemporary fiction can hardly fail to be struck with the fact that a dash Of Irish blood in her veins is now considered necessary as an explanation of the charm of a heroine, that true gallantry in a hero can only be rendered credible by providing him with at least a great grandmother who belonged to an old Irish fam ily. This myth about the Irish character is of comparatively recent growth. The older novel ists knew nothing of it. They either despised us too much to put us into their books at all, or. Lights and Shadows of Irish Life, Vol. 1 of 3 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Lights and Shadows of Irish Life, Vol. 1 of 3 It has been always impressed on my mind, that I ought to write for the Irish, as well as for the English, reader; with this feeling I have never hesitated to exhibit and condemn in my countrymen and countrywomen, that which I considered wrong and capable of alteration. To praise is always easy - to censure, seldom agree able; if I have, at times, seemed to adhere but slightly.to the old caution, be to their faults a little blind, I trust it cannot be said of me. Handy Andy

Book Description

Excerpt from Handy Andy: A Tale of Irish Life A few short papers, under the title of this little venture, appeared, at intervals, in Bentley's Miscellany. Frequent inquiries have' been 'made Why Handy Andy was not continued? And, indeed, I myself regretted the abandonment of what I thought a fruitful subject for fun and whimsicality, though, from various causes, needless to particularise here, the papers were discontinued still, from time to time, recurred the question Why Handy Andy Was not continued 'q and the frequency of the demand has produced the supply.
