THE MONHEGAN MUSEUM: CELEBRATING FIFTY YEARS Edward L. Deci, Emily R. Grey, Jennifer G. Pye, and Robert L. Stahl with contributions by James F. O¿Gorman and Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. edited by Robert L. Stahl Monhegan Museum of Art & History, Monhegan Island, Maine 2018 THE MONHEGAN MUSEUM OF ART & HISTORY was founded in 1968 when automation of the Monhegan Light Station provided the opportunity to acquire the property and transform it into a venue to preserve and display the island¿s rich historical and cultural heritage. As Edward L. Deci, director of the museum for thirty-five years, writes: ¿Remarkably, on this small, isolated island the human history has been extraordinary.¿ The museum now houses a collection of more than 30,000 objects, including nearly 1,500 works of art, many created by some of the giants of American art who have been associated with the 160 year history of the Monhegan art colony.THE MONHEGAN MUSEUM: CELEBRATING FIFTY YEARS represents a special commemorative volume that brings together authors whose varied disciplines capture many different aspects of this unusual museum. Essays describe the Monhegan art colony and its artists; the visionaries of the island community who worked together to bring this museum to fruition; the historical buildings of the museum; the programs that have been initiated to ensure sustainability of the buildings and the conservation of the collection; and the history of the Kent-Fitzgerald Historic Artists¿ Home and Studio. Included are approximately ninety full-color reproductions of works from the museum¿s collections and fifty historic images from its archives.

Katahdin has been called Maine’s greatest treasure. In addition to the outdoor and sporting tradition that surrounds it, there is a distinct tradition of art. For more than a hundred years, some of the most prominent landscape painters—Marsden Hartley, Frederic Church, John Marin, and many others—have portrayed Katahdin. Art of Katahdin is the first book to catalog this tradition. Filled with hundreds of color artworks this books traces the artists who have worked at Katahdin, from the earliest renderings and maps of the area to contemporary views. The text follows some of the history of the region, as well as the artists’ ties to the mountain.

Daniel Kany, art critic for the Portland Press Herald, writes that "Frey's art occupies the nexus between contemporary painting and brushy traditionalism. If there is a focus to this new direction in Maine painting, his art is it." Author of a number of books on Maine art and artists, Carl Little explores art-historical influences on Frey from the Fauvists and Matisse to Rockwell Kent and Howard Hodgkin, and traces the history of landscape painting in Maine, revealing how Frey's bold colors and dynamic brushwork set him apart. "His palette is strong and fresh, his approach painterly in a manner akin to Fairfield Porter and other devoted plein air painters," writes Little. Beautiful reproductions of Frey's portraits of Maine provide eloquent testimony of Frey's vibrant originality.

This publication presents David and Steven Aimone's photographic responses to two beautiful locations--Monhegan Island, Maine and the landscape of Italy. For them, experiencing the landscape and architecture of both alluring places evokes a deep sense of the timeless and transcendent.David and Steven pursue photography together on Monhegan Island each year, and they have a continuous connection to one another through their work, constantly sharing their experiences and observations. It is this mutual love of photography, and these two places, that inspired this publication and the exhibitions that they offer.Architectural forms in Italy range from ancient to Renaissance--worn, burnished, abraded, and conveying a deep sense of history. Walking in the landscape, the small hill towns and cities, one can sense the presence of the many have been to Italy before on a quest to breathe in its timeless beauty.Monhegan Island has a primordial sensibility. The stunning landscape on the back side of the island brags the tallest cliffs on the eastern seaboard of the United States, and they remain virtually untouched due to the preserve set up by Thomas Edison, Jr., now managed by Monhegan Associates. The pairing of images inside the pages of this book illustrate similarities and contrasts in interpretation by each artist as they engage their own distinctly expressive filter.

For more than a century, a Gilded Age mansion on the south side of New York City's Gramercy Park has been home to the National Arts Club (NAC), its magnificent interior a refuge from hectic city life. In this special catalog, Lowrey, curator of the club's permanent collection, documents selected works by Artist Life Members, artists who were given lifetime memberships in the club in exchange for one of their works (the program ended in 1950 with the advent of the abstract expressionists). The father of well-known American sculptor Alexander Calder, Alexander Stirling Calder, was an Artist Life Member, and his sculpture of the painter George Bellows is among the many artworks included here. Also featured are an A-to-Z listing of Artist Life Members and a brief history of the NAC. The catalog section includes full-color reproductions and descriptions of the artworks as well as brief biographies of the artist. Many members' works show European influences, particularly impressionism and the Barbizon school, while others are distinctly American, as in the Ash Can school. A fine and fitting tribute to the NAC legacy that will be of interest to club, academic, and large public libraries. 75 colour & 175 b/w illustrations
