J. L. Austin (1911-1960) exercised in Post-war Oxford an intellectual authority similar to that of Wittgenstein in Cambridge. Although he completed no books of his own and published only seven papers, Austin became through lectures and talks one of the acknowledged leaders in what is called ‘Oxford philosophy’ or ‘ordinary language philosophy’. This volume provides an introduction to the much neglected topic of sculptural friezes, ranging from England to Normandy, the Loire Valley and Northern Italy. Frieze sculpture has until now been one of the least studied aspects of Romanesque art, though examples are to be found all over Europe, set in facades and external walls of many churches. The essays collected here reflect the diversity of aspects considered: problems of narrative and iconography, regional groups, filiations, and conservation.
