Passion of the People?

Book Description

Brazil's victory in the 1994 World Cup is the latest chapter in an extensive history of the world's most popular game in South America. In this engaging account, Tony Mason reviews the place of football in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Mason opens with soccer's rise at the turn of the century amidst the exploding urbanization of Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. He demonstrates that, from its beginnings, the game had wide popular appeal and examines the role of British commercial and military interests as well as that of newcomers from Italy, Spain and Portugal. From the moment when Uruguay won the Olyimpic football tournament in 1924 to Argentina's bizarre appearance in the World Cup final of 1990, international success on the pitch brought with it prestige and influence abroad. At home, Mason shows how dictators used football to ensure political passivity. He concludes by asking if the attention focused on football in Latin America today is exaggerated or whether the game truly is the 'passion of the people'.

Play Thing

Book Description

From USA TODAY bestselling author Nicola Marsh comes book three in the Hot Sydney Nights series! Charlotte Baxter always plays it safe—but a sizzling encounter with a mysterious stranger might just change her cautious ways… I always preferred the romantic heroes in my books to the real-life creeps in bars and on dating apps. Steamy affairs were things that happened to other people, not boring accountants like me—until I met him. I was helping at my aunt’s sex-toy business and tried on some kinky lingerie in a moment of daring. That’s when he came in. I was horrified, but the lust in his eyes sparked a burning desire I’d never felt before. One thing led to another, and soon we were getting very raunchy in the warehouse, doing things I’d only fantasized about. Imagine my horror when I arrived at work the next morning to discover my mysterious stranger was none other than my detestable new boss, Alexander Bronson, who was taking a rare break from traveling to check on the office. He’s the last man I’d usually go for—a power-hungry, jet-setting playboy with no taste for the quiet life—but I can’t stop thinking about that thrilling encounter. Despite his teasing at work, he’s made it clear he wants more. I’m torn. This feels too impulsive, too racy. It’s just a game to him, but perhaps a bad boy is exactly the kind of man I need to get over—and under—before I settle down…

Phenomenology and Deconstruction, Volume Two

Book Description

In this final volume of Robert Denoon Cumming's four-volume history of the phenomenological movement, Cumming examines the bearing of Heidegger's philosophy on his original commitment to Nazism and on his later inability to face up to the implication of that allegiance. Cumming continues his focus, as in previous volumes, on Heidegger's connection with other philosophers. Here, Cumming looks first at Heidegger's relation to Karl Jaspers, an old friend on whom Heidegger turned his back when Hitler consolidated power, and who discredited Heidegger in the denazification that followed World War II. The issues at stake are not merely personal, Cumming argues, but regard the philosophical relevance of the personal.

Johannes Schlaf and German Naturalist Drama

Book Description

First book in English devoted to Johannes Schlaf, the 19th-century German playwright, bringing fresh insights to the whole movement of German naturalist drama. This is the first book in English on the German playwright Johannes Schlaf (1862-1941), whose involvement in 'consistent realism' and modern theatre in the 1890s provides an insight into the origins and development of German naturalist drama. Schlaf's main contributions to this movement were with Die Familie Selicke (1890), on which he collaborated with Arno Holz, and Meister Oelze (1892), works which show his innovative talents. The author considers these works in the context of the experimental prose sketches which Schlaf worked on with Holz after 1888, and of the realist and naturalist dramas of Hebbel, Ibsen, Hauptmann, and Sudermann; he brings out their growing concern with trapped women and victimised children, as well as their critical focus on the problems of traditional poetry.
