"This year in the context of the 2017 Venice Biennale, the European Cultural Centre presents presents "PERSONAL STRUCTURES: Open Borders" in two of its Palazzos in Venice: Palazzo Mora and Palazzo Bembo. The exhibition is organised by the GAA Foundation, that since 2002 has organised exhibitions and symposia worldwide and published books highlighting philosophical themes in contemporary art and architecture. In particular the Foundation has expanded the concepts of Time, Space, Existence, bringing artists and architects from various cultural backgrounds and of different ages together. As sincere as possible, the GAA Foundation presents in this exhibition what can be seen as a modest cross section of European visual art in dialogue with many non-European artists. "PERSONAL STRUCTURES: Open Borders" is an open forum for discussion to take place on the different expressions of contemporary art that break away from any ideological, political and geographical barriers"--Page 12.

Personal Structures presents an ongoing project that deals with questions concerning time, space and existence.This is the second book in the Time. Space. Existence series and involves the personal participation of 46 artists from different parts of the world, in a combination of internationally renowned artists and others whose oeuvre is less known.The concepts time, space and existence are highlighted in very personal ways and from unusual points of view. The many photographs of the artworks and encounters with the artists convey fascinating insights into their being, ideas and work.Seven art projects with established artists centralise their thoughts to a great extent. In addition, the book emphasises two Personal Structures exhibitions that were part of the Venice Biennale in 2011 and 2013.This publication also contains several interviews, artists' statements, and symposium contributions that discuss the theme of this book in detail.Personal Structures was initiated in 2002 by the Dutch artist Rene Rietmeyer. His observation that even in the most distant places artists are occupied with time, space and existence, led to the idea of bringing several of these artists together in publications, symposia and exhibitions.English and Japanese text.







African Language Structures

Wm. E. Welmers surveys a wide range of structural characteristics, both phonological and grammatical, of the languages of sub-Saharan Africa. Drawing on thirty years of experience in the analysis and teaching of African languages, and on work done on some seventy spoken languages, Welmers has organized the volume by linguistic topic. Moral Agency within Social Structures and Culture

Christian ethics has addressed moral agency and culture from the start, and Christian social ethics increasingly acknowledges the power of social structures. However, neither has made sufficient use of the discipline that specializes in understanding structures and culture: sociology. In Moral Agency within Social Structures and Culture, editor and contributor Daniel K. Finn proposes a field-changing critical realist sociology that puts Christian ethics into conversation with modern discourses on human agency and social transformation. Catholic social teaching mischaracterizes social evil as being little more than the sum of individual choices, remedied through individual conversion. Liberation theology points to the power of social structures but without specifying how structures affect moral agency. Critical realist sociology provides a solution to both shortcomings. The Governance Structures of Chinese Firms

China’s extraordinary economic growth is inspiring research from a wide spectrum of fields to explain the phenomenon: What are the primary drivers of China’s economic growth? Can it be sustained? Can the Chinese business model be emulated by other countries? What long-term effects will China’s economic growth have on the global economy? In this volume, Chun Liao explores these issues in the context of firms’ governance structures, arguing that China’s dual business system of state-owned enterprises and private enterprises is uniquely suited to the challenges of economic development in the twenty-first century. On the one hand, China’s state-owned enterprises are characterized by state coordination, bank financing, insulation from the stock market fluctuations, and incremental productivity-enhancing innovations, which are similar to the firms in the business systems of coordinated market economies (like Germany and Japan). On the other hand, China’s private enterprises are characterized by private (often family) ownership, hard budget constraints, profit maximization, and more risky radical innovation, which are similar to the firms in the business systems of liberal market economies (like the US and the UK). Based on the state controlling shareholding in the state sector, the boundary between the state sector business system and private sector business system is clear. This dual type system is contrasted with those in liberal market economies and those in coordinated market economies, where only one type system dominates. Drawing from empirical data and industry analysis over the past 15 years, Liao provides unparalleled access to the dynamics of the Chinese economy, including ownership structure, management design, labor-management relations, business infrastructure, capitalization (including role of banks and financial institutions, private investment, and FDI) in both the public and private sectors. In the process, she analyzes both opportunities and challenges that result from China’s dual business system, particularly in regard to innovation, core competitiveness, and sustainable growth in both state strategic technology-based industries and private high technology industries . The result is an approach that sheds new light on China’s economic performance and its rise as a player on the international stage.

SÉVERINE DENEULIN, MATHIAS NEBEL AND NICHOLAS SAGOVSKY TRANSFORMING UNJUST STRUCTURES The Capability Approach THE CAPABILITY APPROACH Structural injustice has traditionally been the concern of two major academic disciplines: economics and philosophy. The dominant model of economics has long been that of neo-classical economics. For neo-classical economists, human we- being is to be assessed by the availability of disposable income or according to goods consumed; it is measured by the levels of utility achieved in the consumption of commodities. Social order is fashioned by the ways consumers maximise their 1 well-being and enterprises maximise their profits. A core assumption is that all 2 commodities are commensurable: they can all be measured according to a single 3 numerical covering value, which is their price. Within this neo-classical paradigm, justice is achieved when the utility level of someone cannot be increased without 4 another person seeing his or her utility level decrease. The dominant paradigm of neo-classical economics was strongly challenged when development and welfare economist Amartya Sen received the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1998. His work offered an alternative to the neo-classical evaluation of human well-being in the utility/commodity space. The underlining philosophical intuition behind Sen’s work is that the standard of living lies in the living and not in the consumption of commodities. In searching for an alternative measure of human well-being, Sen devised his capability approach.
