After the main course, comprised of Slice of Life and A Second Helping, And The desserts, Cream Puffs and Other Goodies, Linda A. M. Schneider's fourth short story collection is meant to be the after-dinner walk in the park with friends. it contains some reflections, special items, AND maybe an ice cream cone en route. She hopes that her readers will enjoy these treats, another dozen of new ones, along with two repeated favorites. The new stories include some tying up of loose ends about characters in the other collections. College Park has the look and feel of small-town America, with its central business district and tree-lined residential streets, schools and churches, and strong sense of community. College Park, though, was never a town; it developed as a neighborhood within the city of Orlando. The name originated not with a college but instead with a developer, who gave the streets in his new subdivision college names in 1921. In 1925, another developer named the first of several subdivisions College Park. The name caught on and became official with the naming of the College Park Post Office in 1954. Images of America: College Park commemorates 90 years of its history and community. From the 19th-century citrus groves, to new subdivisions in the 1920s, to tract housing in the 1940s and 1950s, College Park evolved as a desirable place for families.

“If the system is mad, absurd, then it probably needs changing. But in trying to change the system, it protects itself by labelling you as mad.” Set in 1984, at a time when political and social change is sweeping through Britain and the last Labour battle is soon to usher in a new economic order, Zombie Park follows the story of Roland Cauldron, who considers himself lucky to be starting a new career as a student psychiatric nurse, living and training on an old asylum in the outskirts of London. But it’s not just his patients Roland has to worry about. He’s working under a management triumvirate led by the psychopathic Interim Chief Executive Morten Slaney, the militaristic Nursing Manager Fitzpatrick and the self-serving Doctor Caldwell, who are only concerned with preserving the reputation of the institution. Roland knows he’s in trouble with the management and his fears are elevated when he meets Annie Buchanan, a former staff member who confronted the sinister Slaney and ended up as a patient on the ward. When Roland meets fellow student Sophie Smith, she challenges him to prove he’s not just all talk and no action, and they team up to take on the management regime. But Roland falls in love with Sophie and this fuses the mix of the personal and political in the closed world of the surreal sanctuary. Roland’s experiences are punctuated by an eclectic series of tragi-comic events. As he copes with the extremes of institutionalised mental illness, he vacillates between helplessness and anger to affect any meaningful change. The easy solution is to self-medicate with his colleagues the Pothead Pixies. Eventually, facing defeat in love and politics, Roland is left abandoned, betrayed and fighting for his life, with only the enigmatic patient Alan Starr to guide and save him from himself. Inspired by Joseph Heller’s Catch 22, Simon Marlowe’s debut novel will appeal to readers who enjoy black comedy and political fiction. It will also appeal to fans of the American Horror Story: Asylum series.

In 1938, a tremendous hurricane devastated southern New England, including Rocky Point Park. The shore dining hall was washed away, and the roller coaster lay in ruins. Owners began to look into other options for this beautiful 80 acres of land along the coastline of Narragansett Bay. The park's future was in jeopardy until 1948, when Providence businessman Vincent Ferla bought it and brought it back to life. He revitalized the midway and brought in new and exciting rides, and on the park's first day back, more than 35,000 people visited. The park thrived for nearly 50 years until its eventual closure in 1995. Today, this scenic spot along the Atlantic Ocean has been returned to the people of Rhode Island as a nature preserve and is flourishing once again.
