This report is the second in a series of three evaluating underexploited African plant resources that could help broaden and secure Africa's food supply. The volume describes the characteristics of 18 little-known indigenous African vegetables (including tubers and legumes) that have potential as food- and cash-crops but are typically overlooked by scientists and policymakers and in the world at large. The book assesses the potential of each vegetable to help overcome malnutrition, boost food security, foster rural development, and create sustainable landcare in Africa. Each species is described in a separate chapter, based on information gathered from and verified by a pool of experts throughout the world. Volume I describes African grains and Volume III African fruits.

Tropical Forage Legumes


Book Description

The development of legume use in agricultural production in the tropics lags far behind the temperate areas and extensive research over recent decades has aimed to rectify the lack of available leguminous fodder species available for heavy clay soils. This book draws together that research and explores the importance of heavy clay soils to agricultural productivity in the tropics and subtropics and the identification of adapted, productive forage legumes for these environments. Providing an invaluable example of how a global search for adapted and productive forage germplasm has been - and can be - undertaken, and allowing access to a significant body of knowledge that was acquired before the digitalization of reports, this book will be a key resource for new scientists and experienced researchers in the areas of agriculture and forage agronomy.

Forage Legumes for Sustainable Agriculture and Livestock Production in Subhumid West Africa


Book Description

Results of a three-year research project conducted in the subhumid region of Nigeria are presented. In order to promote the use of forage legumes for sustainable agriculture, a number of research aspects were addressed including screening collections of the promising pasture legumes Centrosema brasilianum and Aeschynomene histrix and small-scale collection of herbaceous forage species in northern Nigeria. Studies to optimise the utilisation of selected forage legumes included the use of material in combination with grasses for calf supplementation and combining selected legumes to give stable, year-round pastures. Considering the importance of integrating crop and livestock production, studies were also carried out to investigate the potential of selected forage legumes to contribute to both fodder and crop production. Forage seed production and collaboration with national and international institutes in West Africa have also featured.




Land Resources Information Systems for Food Security in SADC Countries

The purpose of the workshop was to promote Land Resources Information Systems (LRIS) and their application in the assessment, mapping and monitoring of land in relation to food security in the South African Development Community (SADC) countries. The workshop reviewed advances made both within and outside SADC. This document contains the proceedings of the Subregional Workshop on Land and Water Information Systems (LWRIS) in the Caribbean, held in Barbados in October 2000. The meeting was organized by FAO Land and Water Development Division (AGL), in collaboration with the Caribbean Agricultural and Research Development Institute. LWRIS experiences in the countries are presented as well as recommendations for future collaboration in database development, reporting and exchange of information, expertise and experience in land and water management in the region and the implementation of regional projects.
