Presents the first results from the 1996 annual National Household Survey on Drug Abuse. The survey provides estimates of the prevalence of use of a variety of illicit drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, based on a nationally representative sample of the civilian noninstitutionalized population age 12 years and older. Estimates are presented on the rates of use, numbers and demographics of users, perceived risks of use, availability of substance, and other measures related to illicit drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, and smokeless tobacco.
