Book Description

Communicating Process Architecture (CPA) describes an approach to system development that is process-oriented. It makes no great distinction between hardware and software. It has a major root in the theory of Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP). However, the underlying theory is not limited to CSP. The importance of mobility of both channel and process within a network sees integration with ideas from the ð-calculus. Other formalisms are also exploited, such as BSP and MPI. The focus is on sound methods for the engineering of significant concurrent systems, including those that are distributed (across the Internet or within a single chip) and/or software-scheduled on a single execution unit. Traditionally, at CPA, the emphasis has been on theory and practice - developing and applying tools based upon CSP and related theories to build high-integrity systems of significant size. In particular, interest focuses on achieving scalability and security against error. The development of Java, C, and C++, libraries to facilitate secure concurrent programming using 'mainstream' languages has allowed CPA to continue and proliferate. This work continues in support of the engineering of distributed applications. Recently, there has been greater reference to theory and its more direct application to programming systems and languages. In this volume the formal CSP is very well presented. The papers provide a healthy mixture of the academic and commercial, software and hardware, application and infrastructure, which reflects the nature of the discipline.

Morphological Image Processing: Architecture and VLSI design


Book Description

This book describes image processing research based on the morphology of the objects in an image and a VLSI design of a Cellular Logic Processing Element for a real-time processor pipeline. The field of image processing has spawned a number of special parallel computer architectures: the Square (SIMD), Processor Array, the Pyramid, the Linear Processor Array (or scan line array) and the Processor Pipeline. This book features a classification of low-level image processing operations, reviews some intermediate level algorithms, and gives a short introduction into computer architecture used for image and digital signal processing. Morphology-based processing images is introduced by treating cellular logic operations such as skeletonization as hit-or-miss transformations. This approach can be extended to images of higher dimensions than two and a method is described to construct hit-or-miss masks for the skeletonization of these images. In the second part of the book a study is performed on the speed bottlenecks that can be found in the main architectural groups followed by the description of a method for the structured design of integrated, digital hardware. The VLSI design of a CMOS Processing Element for the real-time processing of binary images and the board level design of a scalable processor pipeline for a real-time low-level processing of grey value images is described in detail. Finally, a computer architecture for low and intermediate processing of two and three dimensional images if proposed.




Planning and Architectural Design of Modern Command Control Communications and Information Systems

The subject of this book is Command Control Communication and Information 3 (C I) which is the management infrastructure for any large or complex dynamic resource systems. Here command means the determination of what to do, and control means the ongoing managementofthe execution ofa command. 3 Decision making is the essence of C I which is accomplished through a phased implementation of a set of facilities, communications, personnel, equipment and procedures for monitoring, forecasting, planning, directing, allocating resources, and generating options to achieve specific and general objectives. 3 The C I system that is in question here is for a strategic military command including its subordinate commands. Although the design methodology that will be expounded in the book is for a military system, it can, to a large extent, apply also to tactical military as well as to civilian management information systems (MIS). 3 A C I system is a decision making network that reflects a hierarchical organization 3 of C I nodes. Each node is responsible for the management of some portion ofthe available resources, where the higher level nodes are responsible for a 3 correspondingly greater portion of the resources. Within a C I system both command and control decision making occur at every level of the hierarchy. Command decisions at one level determine how to satisfy the management decisions at a higher level.




Enterprise Architecture at Work

An enterprise architecture tries to describe and control an organisation’s structure, processes, applications, systems and techniques in an integrated way. The unambiguous specification and description of components and their relationships in such an architecture requires a coherent architecture modelling language. Lankhorst and his co‐authors present such an enterprise modelling language that captures the complexity of architectural domains and their relations and allows the construction of integrated enterprise architecture models. They provide architects with concrete instruments that improve their architectural practice. As this is not enough, they additionally present techniques and heuristics for communicating with all relevant stakeholders about these architectures. Each paper was rigorously reviewed by at least three Program Committee members and/or external revi- ers, and the acceptance ratio is 35%. These papers were presented over seven technical sessions. Based on the paper review results, three papers were selected as the best papers. We would like to thank the many people who helped make this conference a successful event.
