RARE Total Leadership

Book Description

Studies and writing on leadership have never been so vital for Africa as right now. The natural endowment of many African countries and the remarkable progress made in growing many African economies are compromised by the misguided choices and decisions of the continent's political and economic leadership. There is enough evidence to suggest that Africa is on the right path and full of possibilities -to reach the goal we have only to address the values and principles that many of our leaders embrace. Indeed a disconnect between intellect, spirit and the will to sweat on behalf of the people means the Head, Heart and Hands do not work together, and that is always to the detriment of the people and the delivery of services that our people need. This book makes the link very clear and explores the challenge for Africa as well as the predicament Africa finds itself in. Even though the leadership principles and values proposed here have relevance globally, this is a book that Africans, especially, but also those who are concerned about Africa, need to read. We need to ponder our leadership challenges and how they affect the future of Africa and our place in the 21st century. Africa's young people, who dominate the continent's population, have to adopt a new value system so that Africa can reap the dividends that come from being a 'youthful continent'. The author offers constructive alternatives that can help us protect our common future. She provides qualitative and quantitative evidence to support her arguments and presents a compelling case for RARE Total Leadership-leading with the Head, Heart and Hands-in a simple, practical way that can be applied at all levels of society.Phumzile Mlambo-NgcukaPhumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka was the former deputy president of the Republic of South Africa, the highest position ever held by a woman in the country. She is currently running the Umlambo Foundation, which focuses on leadership and education.

Leadership and Organisational Effectiveness Post-COVID-19

Book Description

This book considers the idea that existing leadership theories have arisen as a result of significant disruption in work structure. The authors argue that the Covid-19 pandemic provided such a disruption and an opportunity to reconceptualise leadership. In order to capture this opportunity and conceptualise new leadership theories, it is first necessary to understand what happened in the past, during the pandemic, and examine the future of work. Addressing three critical issues in leadership, the authors firstly present a framework that helps us understand and enact leadership in the ‘new normal.’ Parts 1 and 2 of the book address the past and current forms of leadership in the context of COVID-19. The book goes on to consider the lessons learned from COVID-19 in the context of the U.N Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs). The targets of SDGs 7 - 17 refer to the need for organisations to operate responsibly; they call for organisations to review their operations processes and to define effective performance using triple-bottom-line measures comprising economic, social and environmental measures. Since leadership plays a significant role in achieving these goals, the book includes chapters on efficiency in process design and operation, definition and implementation of the triple-bottom-line measures and ethical behaviours. Finally, the book explores how the current process of leadership development falls short in today’s context and calls for the need to develop effective leadership mindsets

Total Leadership

Book Description

This book challenges the way we think about both leadership development and ourselves as leaders. Leadership development programs are meant to help people become better leaders at work. But, as author Stew Friedman knows through years of working with thousands of executives, people improve their performance as leaders only when they enhance their performance in other domains of their life at the same time. People are most successful in their leadership roles in organisations when they are also leaders of their own lives; that is, when they increase their capacity to influence everything they care about most in life, including work, family, the broader community, and their own sense of self. This is what Friedman callsTotal Leadershipand has been teaching to MBAs and Executive Education students at Wharton and to executives in several companies like Ford, Booz Allen Hamilton, and Lehman Brothers for several years.

Routledge Handbook of Organizational Change in Africa

Book Description

Although change management and therefore effective adaptation to environmental complexity is considered a uniquely human cultural activity, the extensive change management literature is largely based on the experiences of organizations in the advanced economies of the West. As the economies of African countries become increasingly open, African organizations will need to be agile in order to adapt and grow in a dynamic, global environment. Currently, there is a dearth of contextualized knowledge on change management within Africa, but this handbook aims to address this by bringing together a wide range of experts to explore organizational change and change management from an African context. The handbook adopts a multidisciplinary (historical, philosophical, processual, and strategic) perspective as well as empirical accounts of change management. It addresses such issues as: What are the external and internal pressures for change? What is the content and process of change management? What are the essentials of effective change management? How can change management be theorized from an African perspective? What sort of leadership can best align with change management demands in an African context? How do organizations build internal change management capability? It is hoped that answers to these questions contained in the handbook will provide a contextualized understanding of change management which African organizations and scholars can leverage to respond to the threats and opportunities inherent in their increasingly dynamic environment. The handbook should constitute an essential reference for academics, researchers, and advanced students of change management, development studies, and African studies, as well as practitioners.
