Remains, Historical and Literary, Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 33 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Remains, Historical and Literary, Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 33 The Wills now submitted to the Members of the chetram society were transcribed by the late Rev. John piccope, m.a., Incumbent of Farndon. From the Archives in the Ecclesiastical Court of Chester. By the kind permission of the Rev. Henry raikes, m.a., late Chancellor of the Diocese, he had access to the various documents in the Registry, a privilege of which his peculiar taste for such pursuits and his intimate acquaintance with the pedigrees of Lancashire and Cheshire families, induced him eagerly to avail himself. The entire collection, from which the present volume is taken, consists of nearly three hundred wills and inventories, embracing every class of society in the two counties palatine of Lancaster and Chester. They were originally selected with a view to their future publication by the Society, but a protracted illness unfortunately pre vented my father's hopes being realised during his lifetime. Book Description

Excerpt from Remains Historical Literary Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 9 We have purposely retained some of the letters bearn upon the mode in which the customs were collected in Liverpool, because the want of honesty towards the King's revenue Officers, or rather, the understanding which existed between them and the merchants, was universal at the time these letters were written, and forms a peculiarity in the age when contrasted with that in which we live. Book Description

Excerpt from Remains Historical and Literary, Connected With the Palatine Counties of Lancaster and Chester, Vol. 114 The notes to the second volume edited by Mr. Crossley, though not of less interest, are fewer in number, particularly in the latter part; and as from the time it was issued in 1855, Mr. Crossley seems to have entirely laid the work aside, it may not unfairly be assumed that like many other editors before and since, he had become weary of the task he had undertaken.
