As a talented young musician in Adelaide in the 1920s she won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music where she mixed with the great names of Europe's musical world. She returned in the 1930s to the provincial life of Adelaide and later Sydney. A prolific composer, her works include piano concertos, sonatas and a wide variety of piano works and songs. Her major work has been conducted by Constant Lambert, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Joseph Post and Sir Bernard Heinze and recorded by Walter Geiseking. An examiner since 1945 of the Australian Music Examinations Board, Miriam Hyde OBE AO, remains today the best known name in Australian music for succeeding generations of student pianists.
