Selected Works of Ilya Piatetski-Shapiro

Book Description

This selection of papers of Ilya Piatetski-Shapiro represents almost 50 years of his mathematical activity. Included are many of his major papers in harmonic analysis, number theory, discrete groups, bounded homogeneous domains, algebraic geometry, automorphic forms, and automorphic L-functions. The papers in the volume are intended as a representative and accurate reflection of both the breadth and depth of Piatetski-Shapiro's work in mathematics. Some of his early works, such as those on the prime number theorem and on sets of uniqueness for trigonometric series, appear for the first time in English. Also included are several commentaries by his close colleagues. This volume offers an elegant representation of the contributions made by this renowned mathematician.

Automorphic Forms and Related Geometry: Assessing the Legacy of I.I. Piatetski-Shapiro

Book Description

This volume contains the proceedings of the conference Automorphic Forms and Related Geometry: Assessing the Legacy of I.I. Piatetski-Shapiro, held from April 23-27, 2012, at Yale University, New Haven, CT. Ilya I. Piatetski-Shapiro, who passed away on 21 February 2009, was a leading figure in the theory of automorphic forms. The conference attempted both to summarize and consolidate the progress that was made during Piatetski-Shapiro's lifetime by him and a substantial group of his co-workers, and to promote future work by identifying fruitful directions of further investigation. It was organized around several themes that reflected Piatetski-Shapiro's main foci of work and that have promise for future development: functoriality and converse theorems; local and global -functions and their periods; -adic -functions and arithmetic geometry; complex geometry; and analytic number theory. In each area, there were talks to review the current state of affairs with special attention to Piatetski-Shapiro's contributions, and other talks to report on current work and to outline promising avenues for continued progress. The contents of this volume reflect most of the talks that were presented at the conference as well as a few additional contributions. They all represent various aspects of the legacy of Piatetski-Shapiro.

Selected Papers of S. A. Amitsur with Commentary

Book Description

This handsomely-bound volume presents selected papers written by S.A. Amitsur on various topics in algebra. The approximately 50 papers in the first volume deal with general ring theory and rings satisfying a polynomial identity. A sampling of topics includes algebras over infinite fields, commutative linear differential operators, a generalization of Hilbert's Nullstellensatz, and central embeddings in semi-simple rings. Two essays on Amitsur's work and a biography also are included. The volume is not indexed. c. Book News Inc.

The Selected Works of Phillip A. Griffiths with Commentary

Book Description

Over the last four decades, Phillip Griffiths has been a central figure in mathematics. During this time, he made crucial contributions in several fields, including complex analysis, algebraic geometry, and differential systems. His books and papers are distinguished by a remarkably lucid style that invites the reader to understand not only the subject at hand, but also the connections among seemingly unrelated areas of mathematics. Even today, many of Griffiths' papers are used as a standard source on a subject. Another important feature of Griffiths' writings is that they often bring together classical and modern mathematics. The four parts of Selected Works--Analytic Geometry, Algebraic Geometry, Variations of Hodge Structures, and Differential Systems--are organized according to the subject matter and are supplemented by Griffiths' brief, but extremely illuminating, personal reflections on the mathematical content and the times in which they were produced. Griffiths' Selected Works provide the reader with a panoramic view of important and exciting mathematics during the second half of the 20th century.

Selected Papers of Alberto P. Calderon with Commentary

Book Description

Alberto Calderon was one of the leading mathematicians of the twentieth century. His fundamental, pioneering work reshaped the landscape of mathematical analysis. This volume presents a wide selection from some of Calderon's most influential papers. They range from singular integrals to partial differential equations, from interpolation theory to Cauchy integrals on Lipschitz curves, from inverse problems to ergodic theory. The depth, originality, and historical impact of these works are vividly illustrated by the accompanying commentaries by some of today's leading figures in analysis. In addition, two biographical chapters preface the volume. They discuss Alberto Calderon's early life and his mathematical career.
