Excerpt from Sidelights on Negro Soldiers T gives me great pleasure to write a word of intro lduction to this interesting and important book that Mr. Williams has written. The story of the Negro soldier is one of the romances of American history. Even in the days of the Revolution and the War of 1812 he played an honorable part; but it was the Civil War that gave him his first lar'ge opportunity, and at Port Hudson, Fort Wagner, or Fort Pillow he passed through the baptism of fire, striving that the emancipa tion of his people might be guaranteed and the integrity of his country preserved. We also remember another war, and Santiago and San juan Hill, and not only how Negro men went gallantly to the charge but also how the soldiers in a black regiment faced pestilence and fever that their white comrades might be saved. Then came Carrizal, strange prelude of the great con flict to come and once more, at an unexpected moment, the soul of the nation was thrilled by the courage of the Tenth Cavalry. Theirs not to make reply theirs but to do and die. So in the face of odds they obeyed orders and died beneath the Mexican stars. "In this important, sophisticated, and original study, Chad Williams establishes the centrality of black soldiers and veterans to the struggles against racial inequality during World War I as no other book does. Torchbearers of Democracy sensitively examines the fraught connections between citizenship, obligation, and race while highlighting the diversity of black soldiers' experiences in fighting on behalf of a democracy that denied them rights and dignity. This is a major contribution to political, military, and civil rights history."--Eric Arnesen, George Washington University.

Excerpt from The American Negro Soldier With the Red Hand of France IN the great World War, as in all other wars in which this country has been engaged, the negro has proven himself to be an interesting as well as an important factor. On January lst, 1918, when it was announced that the negro soldiers would be mobilized and sent overseas to take part in the struggle, the eyes of the world were turned on the American negro. The patriotism and fidelity of these people had been rather doubtfully viewed by those who had not been closely related to them. When the call for volunteers came the negro National Guard units rapidly recruit ed to war strength, and when the draft came they responded to their country's call. How does a democratic government conscript citizens, turn them into soldiers who can fight effectively against a highly trained enemy, and then somehow reward these troops for their service? In Doughboys, the Great War, and the Remaking of America, Jennifer D. Keene argues that the doughboy experience in 1917–18 forged the U.S. Army of the twentieth century and ultimately led to the most sweeping piece of social-welfare legislation in the nation's history—the G.I. Bill. Keene shows how citizen-soldiers established standards of discipline that the army in a sense had to adopt. Even after these troops had returned to civilian life, lessons learned by the army during its first experience with a mass conscripted force continued to influence the military as an institution. The experience of going into uniform and fighting abroad politicized citizen-soldiers, Keene finally argues, in ways she asks us to ponder. She finds that the country and the conscripts—in their view—entered into a certain social compact, one that assured veterans that the federal government owed conscripted soldiers of the twentieth century debts far in excess of the pensions the Grand Army of the Republic had claimed in the late nineteenth century.

Excerpt from The Black Troopers: Or the Daring Heroism of the Negro Soldiers in the Spanish-American War History abounds in striking narratives of chivalry and heroism. If profound statesmanship and bitter national struggles; but its most glowing pages are those that record the proud achievements of patriotic soldiers and sailors, in their efforts for the supremacy, Sparta had her Thermopylae;, Haiti her L'Ouverture and Dessalines. Scotland had her Bannockburn, and immortal Bruce. The Afro-Americans have legions, who have forever immortalized themselves by their soldierly conduct in defense of human liberty. It was with the desire to permanently write the names of these illustrious heroes upon the pages of recorded history, and thus insure to generations, yet un-born, a proud heritage, the writing of this volume, as incomplete as it may be, was under taken.
