Straight Business in South America (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Straight Business in South America Most of our literature on South America is either rigidly practical or exuberantly Optimistic. Official bulletins and technical works tell the business man how to sell goods on the Southern continent, but overlook other aspects of trade, such as buying, investments and the development of South American resources. Books of travel and diplomatic propaganda exhibit our South ern neighbors to the best possible advantage, but ignore hard facts with which the business man must deal, and which usually astonish him when he visits the South ern continent. Our South American Trade (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Our South American Trade Circumstances like these explain why Germany and Great Britain have developed so largely their instrumentalities of traffic with South America. They have built steamships and sailing vessels; they have established banks and increased the postal conveniences; they have invested capital in countless industrial concerns, of which mining, railways, street traction, light and power plants, water works and manufacturing establishments are but a few examples; and their purely mercantile enterprises are legion. At the same time their tariff schedules and their navigation laws, as well as their business habits, have undergone modification to meet the exigencies of the South American market and to satisfy both the needs and the demands of the South American customer. Naturally enough all this has served to win the confidence of the South American and to im bue him with a conviction that the European merchants are sincerely interested in his welfare. The Power Supreme

Book Description

Excerpt from The Power Supreme: A Novel of Church and State in South America They are instructive, too, in that they demonstrate the value of a well-regulated social order and the security of a state founded on upright homes and honoured maternity. When the better social conditions are lacking, history shows there is no security for state or individual. Of all the men who told me of their adventures, not one stands out with such prominence in my memory as a half-breed guide named Joaquin, a man of giant strength, manly vigour, and keen intelligence, who had followed wild callings and engaged in revolutions bor dering on the Caribbean Sea from Central America, down through the coast of Colombia, and in Venezuela, but the exact locations in his story are purposely disguised. He was in middle life when he served me some time ago, and the account of him here given deals with the period shortly after our own Civil War. In attempting to tell his story as nearly as possible in his own words, I have sought to imitate the poetic recitative, which in the euphonious language of the Spanish Indian is so naturally fitting and harmonious.
