Tainting Passions

Book Description

Beneath a thin top layer of honey, the barrel is full of shit. At the bottom lies death.Mickey's life was an accident. Dumped by his mother hours after birth and losing his father from a heroin overdose at the age of three, he was adopted by his drug-addicted uncle and grew up in a company of crooks and loafers. Married to an older, deranged former coquette, he led a dull stoner's life up to his early thirties. Everything changed when he became rich overnight.Roaming the depraved streets of central Athens, high on cocaine, he runs into Frida - a charming, barely-adult street prostitute. After spending ten minutes together in a shabby hotel room, he falls madly in love and is prepared to do everything for her. But she is not ready to reciprocate his feelings in the least. She is not capable of showing the slightest fondness towards anything that is not the object of her sole profound craving - a fine brown powder going by the name of heroin. She is, though, very apt in making use of anything that can be the means to obtaining her next dose. A diffident, submissive, and infatuated nouveau riche does perfectly qualify for becoming her habit's ideal sponsor. So does Mickey quit his job, leave his wife and daughter, and move out with Frida to live a restless life of abuse and decay in the fetid streets around Omonoia Square of Athens. He is determined to pull her out of the swamp, save her, become her hero, and ultimately, be loved by her. A part of her thirsts after a normal life, but she has to confront the besetting might of heroin addiction and the sense of nihilism that it engenders. If he stands any chance to help her out of her predicament, he must first overcome his own weaknesses of character, vanity, and paranoid mind. For the time being, Frida is sunk a good way into the barrel, and striving to pull her out, Mickey runs the danger to be dragged in it himself...

Tainted Souls and Painted Faces

Book Description

Prostitute, adulteress, unmarried woman who engages in sexual relations, victim of seduction—the Victorian "fallen woman" represents a complex array of stigmatized conditions. Amanda Anderson here reconsiders the familiar figure of the fallen woman within the context of mid-Victorian debates over the nature of selfhood, gender, and agency. In richly textured readings of works by Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, among others, she argues that depictions of fallen women express profound cultural anxieties about the very possibility of self-control and traditional moral responsibility.

Tainted Love

Book Description

This is the first critical anthology to offer extended analysis of the representation of sexual perversion on screen. Interrogating the recent shift towards the mainstream in the cinematic representation of previously marginalised sexual practices, Tainted Love challenges the discourses and debates around sexual taboo, moral panics, degeneracy, deviance and disease, which present those who enact such sexualities as modern folk devils. This timely collection brings together leading scholars who draw on a variety of critical approaches including adaptation, performance, cultural studies, queer theory, feminism and philosophy to examine screen representations of controversial sexualities from the weird and wonderful to the debased and debauched. Chapters explore provocative performances of hysteria and sexual obsession, `everyday' perversion in neoliberal culture, the radical potential of sadomasochism, adolescent sexuality in the films of Larry Clark, intergenerational sex and incestuous relations in French cinema, sexual obsession in gay cinema, the straightness of necrophilia, the presentation of the paedophile, Swedish Erotica's `good sex' and re-imagining the Marquis de Sade from film to slash fiction. In order to move past binary distinctions of good and bad, normal and abnormal, moral and immoral, Tainted Love seeks to critically interrogate perverse sexualities and sexual perversion on screen.

From the Tainted Heart

Book Description

I am so happy to be able to publish another book of my poems. These poems were written much later than the first book, From the Pure Heart. I write poetry when I feel called to do so. I can go years without writing, and then inspiration strikes and I am writing poem after poem. There is no rhyme or reason (haha). I have learned to go with the flow and where my inspiration, or lack thereof, takes me. I do hope you enjoy reading my poetry as much as I have enjoyed writing them. I have never considered myself a poet, but rather someone who loves to put her feelings and thoughts onto paper. Sometimes I cannot get a certain idea or phrase out of my head, so to quieten those thoughts I channel them into a poem of sorts. My style may be a bit unconventional, but it's MY style. To all those would-be poets, take a chance, and write down your feelings, ideas, and inspirations....you never know where it may take you. Bless you on your journey, Namaste

Tainted Seas

Book Description

So many love stories stop at the wedding vows...when couples pledge to love each other "for better or worse, in sickness and health, til death do us part." But not this one. In 1968, Linda sat next to a handsome sailor in the Penn State cafeteria. Who could resist a handsome sailor? Not Linda, who fell head over heels in love. Against the backdrop of the tumultuous sixties, they married and had three children, and Bud became the Navy officer of his dreams. But their perfect Navy family life unraveled with Bud's frightening symptoms hearkening back to two tours in Vietnam. A sudden collapse led to a diagnosis virtually impossible for a vital young man. While Linda raised their children and followed her vows to care for her husband, two questions plagued her: How could her young and healthy husband suddenly have such a sinister cancer? And how could his beloved Navy abandon him? On a mission of love, Linda spent years unearthing what really happened to Bud, only to find that the military that discarded him had hidden the truth about his illness for decades. Tainted Seas is the sometimes hilarious, sometimes heart-breaking story of a passionate couple coping with tragedy, and the continuing journey of a woman dedicated to justice for military families shattered by the very institutions they nobly served. A loving wife on a mission of true love and truth proves that nothing can stay hidden forever--even against the power of the US government.
