Book Description

This second volume of our Ute trilogy contains a collection of Ute oral texts. Ute oral literature reflects the life experience of a small-scale hunting-and-gathering Society of Intimates and its tight connection to the local terrain, flora and fauna that supported the hunter-gatherer life. Ute story-telling tradition is the people's literary heritage, with the narrative style allowing considerable artistic freedom and diversity in contents and style. Stories were not memorized verbatim, and story-tellers took creative liberty in elaborating and re-inventing the 'same' tale. The core cultural contents of each story are nevertheless preserved across tellers. Ute stories were most likely told at night around the fire, in front of or inside the lodge, to a mixed audience of children and adults who had heard the tale many time before. The stories aimed to both instruct and entertain. Their underlying themes are stoic and oft-cynical reflections on the vagaries of human behavior and harsh existence. They are the foundational literary tradition of The People--Núuchi-u.

Protein Stability and Folding

In 1998, we published the data compilation PROTEIN STABILITY AND FOLDING which covered the data from the early beginnings of thermodynamic studies of protein folding until 1996. Since then, the amount of available thermodynamic data has increased nearly twice. The data constitute very important additions to the information on the protein folding problem, the construction of mutant protein, and the practical application of proteins in various fields. The Supplement covers the period 1997-1999 and is designed to make the vast amount of present data accessible to multidisciplinary research where chemistry, physics, biology, and medicine are involved and also biotechnology, pharmaceutical and food research. At the same time the data could be helpful to identify problems unsolved so far, and to avoid unnecessary duplication of scientific work. The structure of the Supplement is the same as in the previous data compilation. However, some additional data characterizing protein-denaturant interaction and protein unfolding by trifluoroethanol have been added. In that context, some previous data have been reconsidered. The author wishes to thank everyone who provided data, ideas, or even unpublished results. Furthermore, support by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (INK 16 BI-I) is gratefully acknowledged. AI based Robot Safe Learning and Control

The control schemes are mainly developed based on dynamic neural network, which is an important theoretical branch of deep reinforcement learning. The appreciable evolution of the nearly teenaged branch of atomic and molecular physics called beam foil spectroscopy is clearly depicted in the present volumes, which are devoted to publication of presentations at the Fourth International Conference on Beam Foil Spectroscopy and Heavy Ion Atomic Physics Symposium. The transition from childhood to adolescence parallels human experience in that diffusion of interests and interactions beyond the confines of the original family has most certainly occurred. The pre-occupation with techniques and their develop ment has been largely replaced by interest in the physics of the widest possible array of atomic and molecular physics experiments, in which spectroscopic study (visible, UV, XUV, X-ray, electron) of collisional interactions of fast beams is the unifying theme. The description "accelerator-based atomic physics" is perhaps more representative of the subject today than is the original, beam-foil spectroscopy," since so many experiments have nothing to do with foils, and furthermore, employ spectroscopy mainly as an incidental tool. What, then distinguishes beam-foil spectro scopy from overlapping fields of atomic collisions physics? In an era where the boundaries are becoming ever more diffuse, there can be no clear definition. A good functional definition was recently conceived by Peter Erman, under the salubrious stimulus of a large Tennessee bourbon: it is the tribal experience of the community of scientists who have banded together to develop the discipline over the past dozen years, as shared at the triennial conferences devoted to it.
