The Creators - 3

Book Description

In September 1979, during the early days of the Thatcher Government, unauthorised financial speculation places Pat O’Donnell’s company at risk. Jenny, who is now an accountant, works with Pete to save the company. That brings old feelings to the fore, despite Jenny’s generally happy marriage and motherhood of two. But an accident to the husband of Pete’s old friend Liz takes his life in a different direction. A year or so later, Liz and Pete are living together. Pete is now leading Creators Technology, and working part time for the Government as an industrial advisor, whilst Liz is working part time for the miners’ union. That involves them on opposite sides of the Government’s backdown to the miners in February 1981. A few days later, they, Jenny and Carol help a friend from Spain to ensure the military coup there fails. The friend arranges for Creators Technology to have the funds it needs to develop world beating software. Liz and Pete devise a plan to prevent the miners challenging the Government at the end of 1981, when their chances of victory would be greatest. Their plan appears to be working, but is disrupted by the coldest weather on record. Then they face together the greatest challenge, and the greatest sacrifice, against the background of a turning point in national history. Pete’s account ends in June 1982, against the background of national triumph in the Falklands War, and expected business triumph for Creators Technology. He discovers that he is not the only person facing tragedy, and does not go on alone.

The Creators

Book Description

By piecing the lives of selected individuals into a grand mosaic, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Daniel J. Boorstin explores the development of artistic innovation over 3,000 years. A hugely ambitious chronicle of the arts that Boorstin delivers with the scope that made his Discoverers a national bestseller. Even as he tells the stories of such individual creators as Homer, Joyce, Giotto, Picasso, Handel, Wagner, and Virginia Woolf, Boorstin assembles them into a grand mosaic of aesthetic and intellectual invention. In the process he tells us not only how great art (and great architecture and philosophy) is created, but where it comes from and how it has shaped and mirrored societies from Vedic India to the twentieth-century United States.

The Seekers

Book Description

Throughout history, from the time of Socrates to our own modern age, the human race has sought the answers to fundamental questions of life: Who are we? Why are we here? In his previous national bestsellers, The Discoverers and The Creators , Daniel J. Boorstin first told brilliantly how e discovered the reality of our world, and then he celebrated man's achievements in the arts. He now turns to the great figures in history who sought meaning and purpose in our existence. Boorstin says our Western culture has seen three grand epics of Seeking. First there was the heroic way of prophets and philosophers--men like Moses or Job or Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, as well as those in the communities of the early church universities and the Protestant Reformation--seeking salvation or truth from the god above or the reason within each of us. Then came an age of communal seeking, with people like Thucydides and Thomas More and Machiavelli and Voltaire pursuing civilization and the liberal spirit. Finally, there was an age of the social sciences, when man seemed ruled by the forces of history. Here are the absorbing stories of exceptional men such as Marx, Spengler, and Toynbee, Carlyle and Emerson, and Malraux, Bergson, and Einstein. These great thinkers still have the power to speak to us, not always so much for their answers as for their way of asking the questions that never cease either to intrigue or to obsess us. In this impressive climax to a monumental trilogy, Daniel J. Boorstin once again shows that his ability to present challenging ideas, coupled with sharp portraits of great writers and thinkers, remains unparalleled.

TikTok

Book Description

Since its acquisition and rebranding in 2018, TikTok has become one of the fastest growing platforms in the world. Moreover, it's the first Chinese-developed platform to find mainstream international success, carving its own niche in the global short video industry. In the first comprehensive exploration of TikTok, Kaye, Zeng, and Wikström provide a history of the emergent genre of short video and situate the platform within the cultures and controversies that have accompanied its dramatic growth. They provide an extensive overview of TikTok's functions and uses, the diverse markets in which the platform operates, and the issues of governance that have impacted its expansion. Once thought to be 'just for kids', the authors illustrate how TikTok is further transforming platform cultures and the dynamics of broader creative industries. TikTok, the authors argue, represents an evolutionary step in the way culture is produced and consumed on digital platforms. This timely book is essential reading for students and scholars in media and communication studies and for anyone who has been captivated by the global growth of TikTok and short video.
