The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between a principal's philosophy of leadership, school climate, and student achievement at two high schools. This study utilized a leadership style inventory, school climate assessment inventory, and interviews with principals and teachers. Teachers and principals volunteered to participate in this study. Findings from this study suggest that principals who possess a philosophy of servant leadership and utilize its practices have a positive impact on school climate and student achievement. Data derived from a school climate assessment, leadership inventory, and teacher and principal interviews reflected a positive relationship between the servant style of leadership and a school's climate and student achievement as measured by the PSSA. Specific components of leadership were cited as most effective in this study. Teacher perceptions of effective leadership practices included the ability to be approachable, fair, and consistent. Principals cited the ability to be open and have honest communication. Further, the principals found it was essential to support the needs of teachers. The majority of teachers and principals believed that teachers had the greatest impact on student achievement. The principals and teachers surveyed reported that student achievement is most positively impacted when teachers maintain positive relationships with students and set high expectations.

Author's abstract: The primary focus of this study is to explore the perceptions of assistant principals as to how their principals' leadership styles impact school climate. A school's climate plays a vital role in student achievement and principals are the most important factor in setting a setting a school's climate. Therefore, principals' leadership behaviors warrant investigating. This qualitative study identified principal leadership styles through the perceptions of their assistant principals. Interactive interviews were conducted with selected assistant principals in the XYZ School System. Their responses were analyzed, themed and coded to draw a connection between principal leadership style and school climate. These findings can be used in leadership training to familiarize current and aspiring principals with leadership attributes that could positively impact school climate as well as student achievement. Chapter One provided an introduction and summary of the study. Chapter Two provided a background of the relevant literature that is associated with various aspects of leadership and school climate. Chapter Three provided information on methodology procedures used to answer the research questions. Chapter Four provided a report of the data and analysis which includes detailed demographic information. Chapter Five provided a discussion of the findings and implications of the study.







The Effects of Principal Leadership on Teacher Morale and Student Achievement

Teachers comprise the greatest professional population of a school; they have the most contact with students; and they have perhaps the greatest influence on school climate. For this reason, teacher morale is a topic of great concern to public school administrators. Moreover, research suggests that poor teacher morale negatively affects student performance just as high teacher morale positively affects student performance. Research also indicates that teacher morale is influenced more by the leadership style of the principal than any other single factor. This study was designed to determine whether certain relationships exist between teacher morale and the following independent variables: (1) principal trust and (2) leadership satisfaction. Additionally, investigations were conducted to determine whether the aforementioned independent variables lead to increased student achievement. Information regarding teacher morale was collected from 65 teachers using the 2009 MDed - Multi Dimensional Education Incorporated (MDed) Survey at three 7-8 Initiative schools in a large suburban district in southeast Texas. It was the intent of this study to determine whether principal leadership and teacher morale are significantly correlated. The study also demonstrated whether or not teachers' and principals' perceptions of leadership behaviors contribute to student achievement. vi After analyzing the data, it was found that principal leadership behaviors do significantly impact teacher morale, and student achievement. Additionally, it was found that positive teacher morale and student achievement in the Initiative Schools influenced positive student behaviors, ultimately reducing student discipline referrals. Multiple interventions were put into place that led to the positive outcomes. The interventions, new principal leadership, ongoing intensive staff development, establishment of small learning communities, reduction of student population and low student to teacher class ratios, were the catalysts that lead to the Initiative Schools' transformational success, a transformation of high teacher morale, increased student achievement, and positive student behaviors.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this quantitative study was to a) investigate the perceptions of public and private school teachers regarding the extent to which principals exhibit behaviors informed by 13 core competencies of leadership as well as the four dimensions of principle leadership and b) explore the impact these behaviors have on school climate. Through study findings revealed no statistically significant differences between private and public school teachers' perceptions regarding school climate, teacher perception data from the Leadership Behavior Inventory (Green 2014) did suggest that behaviors informed by the 13 core competencies and the four dimensions of principal leadership positively impact school climate. Multiple regression analyses revealed that behaviors informed by diversity, one of the 13 core competencies and the four dimension of principal leadership, had the greatest impact on school climate, Principals who strive to create a better school culture can positively influence teacher effectiveness, student achievement, and school climate by purposefully exhibiting transformational leadership behaviors informed by the 13 core competencies and the four dimensions of principal, had the greatest impact on school climate. Principals who strive to create a better school culture can positively influence teacher effectiveness, student achievement, and school climate by purposely exhibiting transformational leadership behaviors informed by the 13 core competencies and the four dimensions of principals leadership.
