Ancient Art from the Shumei Family Collection

Book Description

Published in conjunction with an exhibition held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art during 1996 and scheduled to travel to Los Angeles during 1997. The works are selected from the holdings of the Shumei Family, a religious organization based in Japan which holds to the belief that beautiful objects elevate the spirit and, therefore, that they were created to be shared (the group is currently constructing a new museum in Japan to house the collection). The works included here--antiquities from the Mediterranean, the Near East, and China--are beautifully presented in color photos, with text by a broad spectrum of curators, art historians, and conservators. Laura Ingalls Wilder

Book Description

This collection of articles written by Wilder for the Missouri Ruralist between 1911 and 1918 can be seen as her prelude to the characters and events she so luminously depicted in the Little House books. Allowing us a glimpse into the craft of an American master, these articles are divided into four thematic sections: Life on the Farm and in the Country; Making a Home; The Ways of the World; and A Woman's Role. Wilder deals with a wide variety of topics, including World War I, the San Francisco Exposition of 1915, and the movement for women's rights. A unique perspective on American life.

Art of the American West

Book Description

"With the expertise of Director Emeritus and Senior Scholar of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West Peter H. Hassrick and newly appointed Haub Curator of Western American Art Laura F. Fry, the Haub Family Collection was shaped into a gift of artworks spanning more than 200 years of American history. In finding a home here, the collection establishes the only major museum collection of western American art in the Pacific Northwest, offering a new dimension of artistic discovery to Tacoma, the State of Washington, and beyond. In selecting their artwork, the Haubs have been guided by love of nature and interest in western history. From the shores of Puget Sound to the sagebrush of Wyoming, they have found inspiration, adventure, and peace in the landscapes of the western United States. It is their hope that this collection at Tacoma Art Museum will continue to inspire others in the years to come"--
