Book Description
Excerpt from The Mineral Resources of the State of Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil: A Paper Read Before the Institution of Mining Engineers; General Meeting at London, July 2nd, 1903 In no part of Brazil was the interest in mining felt more keenly than in the state of Rio Grande do Sn], and during the last few years, several companies have been formed to work metalliferous and other deposits in this state. General Remarks. - The state of Rio Grande do Sul is the southernmost of the United States of Brazil, and it is bounded on three sides by the state of Santa Catharina and the republics of Uruguay and Argentina, and on the fourth side by the Atlantic Ocean. Its geographical position is between 27 degrees 5 minutes and 35 degrees 45 minutes of south latitude, and between 6 degrees 22 minutes and 14 degrees 16 minutes of west longitude from Rio de Janeiro (fig. 1, Plate XX). The language spoken is Portuguese, although, owing to the contiguity of the state to the Argentine and Uruguayan republics, many Spanish words are in general use.
