This book is a reproduction of David Kane's 2008 doctoral thesis on puthi-poṛa, a Bengali tradition of book and manuscript reading. Kane's thesis pursues two central aims. The first is ethnographic: to provide a documentation and description of puthi-poṛa as it was performed in Sylhet, Bangladesh, in 2005. The second is historical: to shed light on a historical mystery-how Islam spread so rapidly and pervasively in Bengal from the sixteenth century. Kane's hypothesis is that puthi-poṛa was used in this process.

This book explores how the Olympic industry has shaped hegemonic concepts of sporting masculinities and femininities for its own profit and image-making ends, examining its continuing marginalization of athletes on account of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and class.

First published in 1946, A Dictionary of International Affairs is virtually an encyclopaedia. This highly useful reference work is indispensable to all who desire to be well-informed about the world in which they live. The scope of this book is unusually wide. It deals with such varied subjects of the Chaco Dispute, Ogpu, Syndicalism, Freedom of the Seas, Balfour Declaration, etc. It also contains statistics about minerals, agricultural produce, and industrial products. In addition, it provides essential information about erstwhile colonies, islands, and nations. It brings together – in a precise style and compact form – a vast amount of basic and interesting information on almost every conceivable aspect of international affairs. Chief emphasis is given to developments since World War I – particularly to those agreements, concepts, agencies, problems, areas and resources which are of continuing importance.

This is the first book to consider all aspects of the life of Agostino Steffani (1654-1728), a composer, diplomat, and bishop. A remarkable figure of the late 17th and early 18th century Europe, Steffani began his career as a composer, musician, and courtier, but his accomplishments brought him high-level positions in the courts of Germany and the Catholic Church. Throughout his diplomatic and ecclesiatical career, Steffani continued to compose chamber music, vocal chamber music, operas, and sacred music--works which inspired Handel and other Baroque composers.
