As engineering materials and structures often contain a metal or metallic alloy bonded to a ceramic, the resultant interface must be able to sustain mechanical forces without failure. They also play an important role in oxidation or reduction of materials. The workshop on 'Bonding, Structure and Mechanical Properties of Metal/Ceramic Interfaces' was held in January 1989 within the Acta/Scripta Metallurgica conference series. It drew together an international collection of 70 scientists who discussed a wide range of issues related to metal-ceramic interfaces. The sessions were divided into 7 categories: structure and bonding, chemistry at interfaces, formation of interfaces, structure of interfaces, thermodynamics/atomistics of interface fracture, mechanics of interface cracks, and fracture resistance of bimaterial interfaces. Within these headings attention was paid to grain boundaries, the influence of chemical processes on the behaviour of interfaces, diffusion bonding, characterization of fracture, and crack propagation by fatigue and by stress corrosion. The book presents a useful reference source for materials scientists, physicists, chemists, and mechanical engineers who are concerned with the roles and properties of interfaces.

Oxygen Reduction Reaction: Fundamentals, Materials and Applications covers the design, synthesis and performance efficacies of the entire spectrum of oxygen reduction catalysts, extrapolating down to their applications in practical, alternative, renewable energy devices. Catalysts covered include heme inspired iron-based, heme inspired non-iron-based, non-heme-based, noble metal-based, non-noble metal-based and metal-free homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The book contains critical analyses and opinions from experts around the world, making it of interest to scientists, engineers, industrialists, entrepreneurs and students. - Discusses the fundamental aspects of oxygen reduction reactions - Offers a comprehensive analysis of the choice and development of catalyst materials for oxygen reduction reaction - Reviews emerging catalyst systems for oxygen reduction reaction - Includes analyses of catalytic performance parameters to evaluate their efficacy in oxygen reduction reactions under varied operating conditions - Covers the importance of oxygen reduction reaction catalysts and processes in real-life applications

Many different chemical processes take place inside solids or at solid surfaces and interfaces. However, their quantitative description sometimes seems difficult to understand. This book by Professor Schmalzried, author of the eminently successful Solid State Reactions; bridges the gap between the 'physical' and 'chemical' approaches to this subject because it is written in a language which both sides understand. For the first time, a comprehensive coverage of the rapidly developing field of Solid State Kinetics is available. The topics covered in this book go far beyond diffusional transport. Homogeneous and heterogeneous solid-state reactions, phase transitions or the influence of external fields are also treated in detail. With this background, the author explains e.g. charge transport mechanisms in ionic conductors, principles of sensor technology, or oxidation processes clearly and comprehensibly. This book is a must for every solid-state chemist and an indispensable tool for academic and industrial readers alike. From reviews: 'a first-rate reference work that a must for any science library' (J. Am Chem. Soc.) 'can be recommended without restrictions ...' (Z. Phys. Chem.)

High temperature gas-solid reactions are ubiquitous on planetary bodies, distributing chemical elements over a range of geologic settings and temperatures. This volume reviews the critical role gas-solid reactions play in early solar system formation, volcanism, metamorphism and industrial processes. The field evidence, experimental and theoretical approaches for examining gas-solid reaction are presented, building on advances in fields outside of Earth Sciences. Computational chemistry techniques are used to probe the nature of molecular clusters and solvation in volcanic vapors and mineral-gas reaction mechanisms. Specialised analytical methods for characterising solid reaction products are included since these reactions commonly form thin or dispersed films and metastable minerals. Finally, the volume contains rich field examples, laboratory experiments and thermodynamic modelling and kinetics of gas-solid reactions on Earth, Venus and beyond.
