Excerpt from The Perpetual Curate, Vol. 3 of 3 The first investigation into the character of the Rev. F. C. Wentworth, Curate of St Roque's, was fixed to take place in the vestry of the parish church, at eleven o'clock on the morning of the day which followed this anxious night. Most people in Carlingford were aware that the Perpetual Curate was to he put upon his trial on that sunny July morning; and there was naturally a good deal of curiosity among the intelligent townsfolk to see how he looked, and what was the aspect of the witnesses who were to bear testimony for or against him. Excerpt from The Perpetual Curate, Vol. 2 of 3 She 7, - who? Cried the Perpetual Curate, in sudden consternation. He was utterly bewil dered by the introduction of a female actor into the little drama, and immediately ran over in his mind all the women he could think of who could, by any possibility, be involved in myste rious relations with his brother Jack. These early works by Alfred Russel Wallace were originally published in the late 19th century and we are now republishing them with a brand new introductory biography. 'A Collection of Essays on Spiritualism' is an anthology of essays that deal with the interaction between science and spiritualism. Alfred Russel Wallace was born on 8th January 1823 in the village of Llanbadoc, in Monmouthshire, Wales. Wallace was inspired by the travelling naturalists of the day and decided to begin his exploration career collecting specimens in the Amazon rainforest. He explored the Rio Negra for four years, making notes on the peoples and languages he encountered as well as the geography, flora, and fauna. While travelling, Wallace refined his thoughts about evolution and in 1858 he outlined his theory of natural selection in an article he sent to Charles Darwin. Wallace made a huge contribution to the natural sciences and he will continue to be remembered as one of the key figures in the development of evolutionary theory.
