These are the reflections of a patriotic young officer who volunteered to fight in the infantry during Americas war in Vietnam. Wanting to fight the evil of communism and do right by all he knew, this Southern soldiers first thought when jumping from a helicopter into the tall grass of a field in Vietnam on his first air assault operation was Im the ultimate extension of American foreign policy, and Im here to execute that policy, by God. Full of patriotism and the invincibility of youth, Elliott wanted to fight. He wanted to do Americas bidding against our enemies. The Russians were the main antagonists, the enemy of his generation, but the enemy in Vietnam would do. Then as the days and weeks went by, a voice of doubt began to speak louder and louder as the shadow of disillusionment crept in. Later, as the months went by, he would descend into a nightmare of despair and pain as men died needlessly and in vain, and others were shattered in mind and body. Squandered valor and wasted sacrifices would eat at his soul, right up to the breaking point and beyond. Follow me then into Dantes Inferno, a special kind of hell where you are alone, you are isolated, and you do not know why you are there. But you are there, and death, maiming, and a panoply of hideous events await your every move, your every breath. It may not happen today, but it probably will tomorrow. You have yourself and those few around you. You have been forsaken by your country and condemned to the valley of the shadow of death by those politicians who knew not what they were doing. There is nothing and no one to light or guide your way. You are not on a crusade. There are no grand parades, and no one can see you. No one will buy bonds to win the war; no one really cares. For some, even their families betrayed them. You are now, as General Sherman said, in hell. Walk with me then in the footsteps of the infantry.

»Fictional Practices of Spirituality« provides critical insight into the implementation of belief, mysticism, religion, and spirituality into worlds of fiction, be it interactive or non-interactive. This first volume focuses on interactive, virtual worlds - may that be the digital realms of video games and VR applications or the imaginary spaces of life action role-playing and soul-searching practices. It features analyses of spirituality as gameplay facilitator, sacred spaces and architecture in video game geography, religion in video games and spiritual acts and their dramaturgic function in video games, tabletop, or LARP, among other topics. The contributors offer a first-time ever comprehensive overview of play-rites as spiritual incentives and playful spirituality in various medial incarnations.

When a fantasy world has fully functioning smartphones and internet (for some reason), it’s only natural for its sixteen-year-old shut-in of a Hero to declare war via text message on the Demon Lord who has abducted the kingdom’s princess. But is it natural for that Demon Lord to be an innocent teenage girl who hates conflict?!! And somehow, this hopelessly weak, level one Hero ends up texting that overly pure Demon Lord, her cheerful Demon Generals (who are all smitten with her), and a kidnapped princess who is seriously falling for her captor as he sets off on a perilous journey to meet his online cru—er, mortal enemy face-to-face!

"Marine Sergeant Freddy Gonzalez took over as platoon sergeant before his company entered Hue City and quickly found themselves surrounded by enemy forces trying to stop the Marines from entering Hue City, on Jan. 31, 1968, at the beginning of the horrific Tet Offensive. Over the course of the next three days he was wounded several times while saving fellow Marines and launching brave, deadly, solitary attacks on enemy positions. On the morning of Feb. 4, 1968, at the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, he fired a dozen rockets at North Vietnamese Army positions, saving the pinned-down platoon, giving his life for his men. He was the only man awarded the Medal of Honor for the month-long battle of Hue City--the most violent, intense fighting of the entire 10-year war. Born in Edinburg, Texas, May 23, 1946, Freddy was the only child born to Dolia Gonzalez. She raised him alone on the wages of a waitress and a farm worker. He also worked in the fields during his youth, until graduating from high school and joining the Marine Corps in the summer of 1965. This is his story"--P. [4] of cover.

Fiction. For the characters in MAN'S COMPANIONS, the self is a degraded version of someone else. Fantasy is stymied by performance anxiety. Delayed gratification phones in a last-minute cancellation. The fictions in this collection are mongrel, troubling the genus of story with miscegenations and mutations, and at the heart of the book is the figure of the anima non grata, the unwanted woman, a degraded version of man. Using language by turns digressive, obsessive, overblown, romantic, fickle, and mundane, MAN'S COMPANIONS manipulates feminine tropes and finds a kind of joyous liberty in its proliferation of thwarted affairs and awkward interludes.
