Masters of the Game

Book Description

Veteran legal issues reporter Kim Eisler takes us behind the scenes into mega law firm Williams & Connolly, guiding us on a journey through the many storied cases that have served to shape current policies in public and private sector alike For the past twenty years, author and journalist Kim Eisler has covered the law firm of Williams & Connolly, first at American Lawyer Magazine, then for Legal Times and since 1993 as National Editor of Washingtonian Magazine. More than any other writer, Kim has unprecedented and unusual contacts and relationships with the partners, as well as a background knowledge and familiarity with the firm's history and personnel over the past two decades. In Masters of the Game, Eisler sets out to demonstrate how the disciples of Edward Bennett Williams went beyond anyone's expectations and came to occupy key roles in American culture and business. In the last ten years of his life, Williams, the founder of Williams and Connolly, often said he was building not just a law firm but a monument. Masters of the Game is not only about a law firm, but about how the philosophy and practices of this particular law firm have spread out beyond Washington to dominate business, finance, sports and the American psyche itself through its influence with past, present and future political, corporate and media figures.

Professional Values and Individual Autonomy

Book Description

Professional Values and Individual Autonomy: The United States Supreme Court and Lawyer Advertising begins with a comprehensive history of the issue of lawyer advertising in the United States from the early nineteenth century until 1977. It focuses on the changing nature of the legal profession's view of the compatibility of advertising with the concept of law as a "profession." The second part, which occupies most of the text, is a study the ten United States Supreme Court opinions decided since 1977 that address the limits of state power to outlaw lawyer advertising. In Bates v. State Bar of Arizona (1977) the Supreme Court for the first time ruled that the First Amendment places limitations on the power of states to restrict lawyer advertising. The Bates decision, which was -- and is -- highly controversial, dramatically altered the legal landscape. Although the Supreme Court has repeatedly revisited this issue, the propriety of lawyer advertising remains a much debated topic both within and without the legal profession. Hylton includes lightly edited versions of the ten opinions as well as extensive note material which address the way in which the bar and state courts and legislatures responded to these decisions. The book's purpose is to explore in depth the complex web of constitutional and professional concerns involved in the debate over lawyer advertising. Although the materials are arranged with an eye toward classroom use in law school courses on the legal profession, legal ethics, professional responsibility, First Amendment law, and law and sociology, the book is not exclusively a text book. Bar association officials, judges, and practicing lawyers can also benefit from this book.

The Partner Track

Book Description

An “engaging and suspenseful” novel of a first-generation Chinese American having second thoughts about her elite Manhattan law firm (The Wall Street Journal). Ingrid Yung’s life is full of firsts. A first-generation Chinese American, the first lawyer in her family, she’s about to collect the holy grail of firsts and become the first minority woman to make partner at the venerable old Wall Street law firm Parsons Valentine & Hunt. Ingrid has perfected the art of “passing” and seamlessly blends into the old-boy corporate culture. She gamely banters in the cafeteria, plays in the firm softball league, and earnestly racks up her billable hours. But when an offensive incident at the summer outing threatens the firm’s reputation, Ingrid’s outsider status is suddenly thrown into sharp relief. Scrambling to do damage control, Parsons Valentine announces a new diversity and inclusion initiative, commanding Ingrid to spearhead the effort—just as she’s about to close an enormous transaction that was to be her final step in securing partnership. For the first time, Ingrid begins to question her place in the firm. Pitted against her colleagues, including her golden-boy boyfriend, Ingrid wonders whether the prestige of partnership is worth breaching her ethics. But can she risk throwing away the American dream that’s finally within her reach? “Thought-provoking . . . [a] compelling tale.” —Booklist “Funny, fragile, sometimes bold, often unsure, Ingrid Yung is one of those unforgettable heroines that you actually miss, like a dear friend, when the story’s over.’“—Ann Leary, New York Times–bestselling author of The Foundling “Intriguing and entertaining.” —Library Journal
