THERE ONCE WAS A CAT is designed to appeal to many types of readers: cat fanciers, poetry lovers, and young readers. This book combines the antics of cats with lighthearted limerick poetry into a colorful, educational and fun-filled reading experience. The book contains twenty-six amusing limericks written about cats. The cats are named alphabetically, starting with A for Anna and ending with Z for Zipper. Each limerick is presented with a watercolor illustration. Within each illustration is the first letter of the cat's name. For example, on the page about Anna, the young reader can search for all the A's in the illustration, count them, and check the total with the answer page. Young readers, then, gain experience in alphabet, letter recognition, and counting skills. Author Mary Jane Cogan holds a master's degree in education. She drew from her experiences as a cat lover, artist, and reading teacher to create this multi-faceted book.
