The Chemistry of Nonbenzenoid Aromatic Compounds — II is a collection of plenary lectures presented at the Second International Symposium on the Chemistry of Nonbenzenoid Aromatic Compounds. Starting with a review of the synthesis and study of select heterocycles, the book includes results and developments in this area. A significant part of the reviews of nonbenzenoid aromatic compounds is the examination of annulenese that contain larger Huckel systems than benzene. The demand for better synthetic methods in the study has increased as bridged annulenes have been made for suitable models of testing theoretical concepts. Early studies on some nonbenzenoid aromatic compounds and the related problems are also discussed. A description of the syntheses of several polycyclic systems that contain potential cyclobutadiene rings follows. Studies are made on 8-oxoheptafulvene chemistry after earlier chemical and physical examination of heptafulvene and related compounds provided avenues for research. Some aspects of strained systems, [4]annulene and its Ch+adduct are reviewed in terms of usefulness when applying a theoretical guide, proving the calculations and experiments. Studies on higher membered annulenyl ions belonging to five groups are also discussed. Professor Wilson Baker, F.R.S. Organic compounds are classified as aliphatic, carbocyclic, or heterocyclic, though in the very many cases where two or more such characteristic groupings are present, the classification chosen will depend on the relative chemical importance of these groupings to the particular investigation in hand, and perhaps even to the outlook of the investigator. Traditionally, however, ring compounds with attached aliphatic groups are referred to as cyclic, and any hetero cyclic grouping serves to categorise a molecule as heterocyclic. In these reviews it is the intention to deal, so far as possible, with carbocyclic compounds only, as borne out by this Volume I of the series with articles on the benzidine rearrangement, the bicyclo [3,3,1]nonanes, Feist's acid, and the annulenes. The difficulty in keeping rigidly to carbocyclic substances is, however, apparent in the chapter on 'The Biosynthesis of Carbocyclic Compounds', where many heterocyclic compounds are encountered, as is inevitable in any reasonably comprehensive account of biosynthesis.

In the last hundred years benzenoid hydrocarbons have constantly attracted the attention of both experimental and theoretical chemists. In spite of the fact that some of the basic concepts of the theory of benzenoid hydrocarbons have their origins in the 19th and early 20th century, research in this area is still in vigorous expansion. The present book provides an outline of the most important current theoretical approaches to benzenoids. Emphasis is laid on the recent developments of these theories, which can certainly be characterized as a significant advance. Em phasis is also laid on practical applications rather than on "pure" theory. The book assumes only some elementary knowledge of organic and physical chemistry and requires no special mathematical training. Therefore we hope that undergraduate students of chemistry will be able to follow the text without any difficulty. This book has been prepared as an introduction to the chemistry of odorous molecules. While there exist a number of works of an encyclopedic nature which cover this field, there is none which treats the subjectin an instructional fashion. To fill this gap, a group of scientists, types from the chemical point of view, to present to the reader the panorama of those molecules that stimulate the sense of smell. To make the picture complete, the chapters that are strictly chemical in content are preceded by several that introduce the topics of the physiology of the olfactory system, the current hypotheses on the mechanism of the sense of smell, and the structure-odor relationships in odorous molecules. There is also a treatment of analytical techniques which have become important to fragrance chemical research and testing.
