Another writer says: "Those who defy the rules of the best society, and claim to be superior to them, are always coarse in their moral fibre, however strong they may be intellectually," - a sentiment we most heartily endorse. In no other country, probably, are so many people anxiously inquiring, What are the requirements of good society? and when once the correct form is known there is a genuine desire to conform to it. It was in the hope of helping these earnest inquirers that this work was undertaken. In the constant daily intercourse of people, in city and country, it is very important that they should understand those customs and observances which will enable the different social units to mingle together pleasantly and without needless friction.
