Transformative Learning

Book Description

With this powerful book, Edmund O'Sullivan aims to radically alter the role of education in building a sustainable future. He addresses the reform of eduction in completely new terms. Where most contemporary "reforms" are about how to make education less expensive, O'Sullivan focuses on how to make it more relevant--personally and globally--in the next millennium.

Visions

Book Description

This volume collects the research of today's scientists to explore the possibilities of the science of tomorrow. Among the issues covered are how decoding DNA will allow us to alter and reshape our genetic heritage, and how quantum physicists will harness the energy of the Universe.

Exposure Science in the 21st Century

Book Description

From the use of personal products to our consumption of food, water, and air, people are exposed to a wide array of agents each day-many with the potential to affect health. Exposure Science in the 21st Century: A Vision and A Strategy investigates the contact of humans or other organisms with those agents (that is, chemical, physical, and biologic stressors) and their fate in living systems. The concept of exposure science has been instrumental in helping us understand how stressors affect human and ecosystem health, and in efforts to prevent or reduce contact with harmful stressors. In this way exposure science has played an integral role in many areas of environmental health, and can help meet growing needs in environmental regulation, urban and ecosystem planning, and disaster management. Exposure Science in the 21st Century: A Vision and A Strategy explains that there are increasing demands for exposure science information, for example to meet needs for data on the thousands of chemicals introduced into the market each year, and to better understand the health effects of prolonged low-level exposure to stressors. Recent advances in tools and technologies-including sensor systems, analytic methods, molecular technologies, computational tools, and bioinformatics-have provided the potential for more accurate and comprehensive exposure science data than ever before. This report also provides a roadmap to take advantage of the technologic innovations and strategic collaborations to move exposure science into the future.

Developing a Vision for Ministry

Book Description

Strong leaders have vision that is both far-reaching and focused on the details. Having that vision is what separates the church with a hodge-podge of ineffective programs and activities from churches that reach people effectively, efficiently, and consistently with the Good News. Now in its third edition, this groundbreaking book continues to offer church planters, pastors, and ministry leaders concrete help with crafting vision statements, encouraging buy-in from the influencers in the church, turning up the energy level, and ultimately growing the church.

Ecumenical Visions for the 21st Century

Book Description

"The world needs people with Christian passion, spiritual commitment, theological competence and persistence to recapture and rearticulate a biblically well-grounded ecumenical vision and what it implies for the unity of the church in the context of world Christianity in the decades to come." -- Olav Fykse Tveit, General Secretary, World Council of Churches *** In an era when life itself is imperiled, Christians around the world are challenged to authentically bear witness to the God of life and to justice and peace. Ecumenical Visions for the 21st Century - prepared as a core resource for theological reflection - equips Christians to discern and develop relevant and responsible insights in many arenas of Christian engagement. The anthology includes 44 key documents from the last two decades of ecumenical work, most in full texts. It illuminates the changing face and features of world Christianity, with particular focus on Asian Christianity and Christianity in Korea, and it highlights important ecumenical convergences in Christian unity, mission, advocacy, and service. Additionally, the book presents the latest and best ecumenical thinking about Christian engagement on issues of justice and peace, poverty, the economy, education, gender, climate change, migration, HIV and AIDS, and interreligious encounter. A full bibliography and CD-ROM with 20 supplemental readings are also included.

Biological Vision

Book Description

After applying the principles of visual science to military reconnaissance and intelligence for many years, the author has prepared a tutorial integrating the many fundamental mechanisms underlying the visual capability found in the animal kingdom. He shows that multicolor vision has been found in the animal kingdom from the beginning (for at least 500 million years) and that vision is generally tetrachromatic. He shows that human vision follows this general plan, although its spectral performance is partially blocked by the absorption inherent in the lens of the eye. As a result, the human can be considered a blocked tetrachromat; in the vernacular but unscientifi cally, a trichromat. He provides an extensive series of circuit diagrams, from those defi ning the electrical performance of individual neurons, synapses and Nodes of Ranvier to complete diagrams integrating all of the major visual circuits of the eyes and the brain. The fundamental mechanisms and physiology associated with the photoreceptor cell of the eye are developed in detail, including the precise chemical composition of the four chromophores of vision. The concept of an ion-pump is defi ned in terms of the underlying electrostenolytic process for the fi rst time. It is shown that glutamic acid (glutamate) is the primary energy source powering the neural systems of all animals. The key elements of the midbrain involved in reading are described for the fi rst time. The book closes with a variety of fi gures describing the spatial and chromatic performance of the human visual system. Additional fi gures, an extensive glossary, an expanded tabulation of the parameters of the human eye, and more than 1000 references are available at the associated website, www.4colorvision.com.

Evidence-Based Strategies for Leading 21st Century Schools

Book Description

Discover how award-winning schools advance students′ learning through technology! How can a school best use technology for teaching and learning? This inspiring book profiles eight visionary schools that are achievers in how they approach technology. In this companion to Leading 21st Century Schools, Lynne Schrum and Barbara Levin offer insights direct from principals, teachers, superintendents, and others involved in implementing technology in K-12 environments. Readers will find a step-by-step guide to building a 21st century school, complete with resource directories and study group questions. This book will provide evidence-based strategies for: Becoming a school culture that embraces technology and 21st century skills Creating a 21st century classroom, including new instructional approaches and professional development opportunities Selecting the right technology plan, infrastructure, and devices for your school Managing costs through funding and budget strategies Measuring progress through effective use of data Learn from 21st century schools in action and develop your own path to integrating technology within your school! "If I were a leader moving my school or district toward a digital age environment, I would want two things: a conversation with people who had done it to learn what worked and what didn′t, and a real review of the literature. This book supplies a deep dose of both. Even a brief dive offers nuggets of applicable information for leaders." —Hall Davidson, Senior Director of Global Learning Initiatives Discovery Education "Schrum and Levin not only look at the growing research, but look deeply at successful schools that are utilizing 21st century tools and what factors influence their success. This book contributes significantly to the necessary skills of tomorrow′s leaders." —Chip Kimball, Superintendent Lake Washington School District
