This thematic issue on advanced simulation tools applied to materials development and design predictions gathers selected extended papers related to power generation systems, presented at the XIX International Colloquium on Mechanical Fatigue of Metals (ICMFM XIX), organized at University of Porto, Portugal, in 2018. In this issue, the limits of the current generation of materials are explored, which are continuously being reached according to the frontier of hostile environments, whether in the aerospace, nuclear, or petrochemistry industry, or in the design of gas turbines where efficiency of energy production and transformation demands increased temperatures and pressures. Thus, advanced methods and applications for theoretical, numerical, and experimental contributions that address these issues on failure mechanism modeling and simulation of materials are covered. As the Guest Editors, we would like to thank all the authors who submitted papers to this Special Issue. All the papers published were peer-reviewed by experts in the field whose comments helped to improve the quality of the edition. We also would like to thank the Editorial Board of Materials for their assistance in managing this Special Issue.

Porphyrins, phthalocyanines and their numerous analogs and derivatives are materials of tremendous importance in chemistry, materials science, physics, biology and medicine. They comprise the red color in blood (heme) and the green in leaves (chlorophyll); they are also excellent ligands that can coordinate with almost every metal in the Periodic Table. Grounded in natural systems, porphyrins are incredibly versatile and can be modified in many ways; each new modification yields derivatives demonstrating new chemistry, physics and biology, with a vast array of medicinal and technical applications.Because porphyrins are currently employed as platforms for study of theoretical principles and applications in a wide variety of fields, the Handbook of Porphyrin Science represents a timely ongoing series dealing in detail with the synthesis, chemistry, physicochemical and medical properties and applications of polypyrrole macrocycles. It is noteworthy that every year, new applications for tetrapyrrole ligands are developed and exploited.Professors Karl Kadish, Kevin Smith and Roger Guilard are internationally recognized experts in the research field of porphyrinoids, each having his own separate but complementary area of expertise in the field. Between them, they have published over 1750 peer-reviewed papers and jointly edited more than 55 books on diverse topics related to porphyrins and phthalocyanines. In assembling the set of new volumes of this unique handbook, they have selected and attracted the very best scientists in each sub-discipline as contributing authors. The Handbook of Porphyrin Science will prove to be a modern authoritative treatise on the subject as it continues as a collection of up-to-date works by world-renowned experts in the field. Complete with hundreds of figures, tables and structural formulas, and thousands of literature citations, all researchers and graduate students in this field will find it to be an essential, major reference source now, and for many years to come.

Over the past several decades major advances in accelerators have resulted from breakthroughs in accelerator science and accelerator technology. After the introduction of a new accelerator physics concept or the implementation of a new technology, a leap in accelerator performance followed. A well-known representation of these advances is the Livingston chart, which shows an exponential growth of accelerator performance over the last seven or eight decades. One of the breakthrough accelerator technologies that support this exponential growth is superconducting technology. Recognizing this major technological advance, we dedicate Volume 5 of Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology (RAST) to superconducting technology and its applications. Two major applications are superconducting magnets (SC magnets) and superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. SC magnets provide much higher magnetic field than their room-temperature counterparts, thus allowing accelerators to reach higher energies with comparable size as well as much reduced power consumption. SRF technology allows field energy storage for continuous wave applications and energy recovery, in addition to the advantage of tremendous power savings and better particle beam quality. In this volume, we describe both technologies and their applications. We also include discussion of the associated R&D in superconducting materials and the future prospects for these technologies.

This open access book presents a collection of the most up-to-date research results in the field of steel development with a focus on pioneering alloy concepts that result in previously unattainable materials properties. Specifically, it gives a detailed overview of the marriage of high-performance steels of the highest strength and form-ability with damage-tolerant zirconia ceramics by innovative manufacturing technologies, thereby yielding a new class of high-performance composite materials. This book describes how new high-alloy stainless TRIP/TWIP steels (TRIP: TRansformation-Induced Plasticity, TWIP: TWinning-induced Plasticity) are combined with zirconium dioxide ceramics in powder metallurgical routes and via melt infiltration to form novel TRIP-matrix composites. This work also provides a timely perspective on new compact and damage-tolerant composite materials, filigree light-weight structures as well as gradient materials, and a close understanding of the mechanisms of the phase transformations. With a detailed application analysis of state-of-the-art methods in spatial and temporal high-resolution structural analysis, in combination with advanced simulation and modelling, this edited volume is ideal for researchers and engineers working in modern steel development, as well as for graduate students of metallurgy and materials science and engineering.

Green purchase behavior refers to consumers purchasing green products that are environmentally friendly, using fewer resources, and causing lower environmental impact and risk. As a growing number of people start to recognize the importance of individual responsibility for environmental protection, firms are increasingly motivated to develop green products to fit the needs of this green advocation. Despite an emerging number of consumers claiming their preference towards green brands compared to traditional alternatives, researchers have found that there is a huge gap between consumers’ purchase intention and actual behavior, which has gained much attention. The psychological process of green purchase behavior may be a complicated process influenced by various factors, such as consumer values and norms, the pros and cons marketed for green products, and various other situational factors. Scholars are calling for research that explores the psychological decision-making process of green purchase behavior from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Due to the high pricing of green products, the trade-off between the price and function of green products may lower consumers’ satisfaction. Thus, there is always a gap between green purchase intention and actual purchase behavior. What determines consumers’ actual green purchase behavior? Under what conditions, will the consumers pay a premium price for green products? What prompts consumers to choose green brands over traditional alternatives? Will green consumption be a passing trend or a long-term consumption habit? What influences the frequency of consumers’ green purchasing? Scholars are welcome to share their opinions and findings about green purchase behavior to help explore this research topic. We are extremely interested in the determinants of green purchase behavior and the mechanism of facilitating green consumption considering different perspectives.
