Harley, Petersham, 1839?, accompanied by addressed envelope, with full signature, "Charles Dickens" on face, with wax seal intact; Letter to William Scholefield, telling him he'd be happy to preside at the Birmingham meeting, Devonshire Terrace, January 4, 1844; Autograph, dated January 1849; Letter to Madame Celeste, telling her he'd be happy to sign her book if she could send it to Travistock House, dated May 29, 1858, accompanied by "William Glyde Wilkins" book plate, and typescript of letter; Letter to Mr. Lillie, complimenting him on they way he handled the pictures, Gad's Hill Place, dated August 26, 1860; Letter to Mr. Watkins, telling him that he wrote to Frederick Chapman, Gad's Hill Place, dated November 8, 1866; Letter to Mrs. Atwood "Nothing can be more purely honorable...", Gad's Hill Place, dated October, 8, 1867; approximately 140 newspaper clippings relating to Charles Dickens.

Book Description

Comprises: (1) 170 autograph letters from Charles Dickens to various correspondents, held in two volumes covering the years 1834-1852 and 1853-1870 respectively and bound in chronological order, together with a letter from S.L. Blanchard; (2) A further autograph letter from Dickens to George Dolby, dated 12 December 1866, bound separately; (3) 5 volumes compiled by E.G. Millar containing a variety of manuscript material related to the collection, including 2 volumes of manuscript transcripts of the letters, indexes to the letters, a descriptive catalogue of the letters, correspondence relating to the inclusion of the letters in the edition planned by Humphry House, and receipts for binding; and (4) An archive box holding Sotheby's 'Comte de Suzannet Sale Catalogue of Charles Dickens', receipts, and correspondence relating to Millar's purchase of the letters.

This collection consists of 65 letters from Charles Dickens to his contemporaries (MA 94.3-67), 32 letters from Dickens to Mary Boyle (MA 94.68-99), 4 letters to Mary Boyle from various friends that mention Dickens (MA 94.100-103), and three engravings of Dickens (MA 94.1-2 and MA 94.104). Items are described in individual records.
