After serving in the army from 1643 to 1667, he was, in 1673, appointed agent at the court of Brussels, receiving the honour of knighthood on his return to England in 1675. A few months later he went back to Brussels in the capacity of Resident, and after the accession of James II. Received the title of Envoy. He remained at Brussels until the Revolution.
