89plus : curating the future. New artists and creatives, born in or after 1989.

Book Description

A fast-paced introduction to the designers, artists, and creatives shaping tomorrow's world. Curators Simon Castets and Hans Ulrich Obrist join forces to ask an important question: How will the world be different when its most influential creatives are born into a universally accessible Internet? This international project tracks the changing modes of production, concerns, aspirations, and projects of 100 protagonists born in or after 1989. Illustrated profiles include artists, writers, architects, filmmakers, musicians, designers, scientists and technologists, and many who elide two or three genres, as they were once known. 89+ is essential reading for all who would understand the creative force of a generation whose voices are only starting to be heard, yet which accounts for almost half of the world's population.

Post-Digital, Post-Internet Art and Education

Book Description

This open access edited volume provides theoretical, practical, and historical perspectives on art and education in a post-digital, post-internet era. Recently, these terms have been attached to artworks, artists, exhibitions, and educational practices that deal with the relationships between online and offline, digital and physical, and material and immaterial. By taking the current socio-technological conditions of the post-digital and the post-internet seriously, contributors challenge fixed narratives and field-specific ownership of these terms, as well as explore their potential and possible shortcomings when discussing art and education. Chapters also recognize historical forebears of digital art and education while critically assessing art, media, and other realms of engagement. This book encourages readers to explore what kind of educational futures might a post-digital, post-internet era engender.

Creative Chicago

Book Description

On September 29, 2018, before a live audience at Navy Pier in Chicago, international curator Hans Ulrich Obrist conducted his first US Marathon interview session as part of Art Design Chicago, a yearlong celebration of Chicago's art and design legacy initiated by the Terra Foundation for American Art. Obrist, who has undertaken a life-long project of interviewing cultural figures, spoke with more than twenty of Chicago's most innovative and influential artists, designers, architects, writers, and other creatives. In their interviews, this diverse group of creatives provided insights into their artistic processes, influences, and ideas about and hopes for their shared city of Chicago. Among the participants were social-practice artist/developer Theaster Gates, architect Jeanne Gang, writer Eve Ewing, Hairy Who artists Art Green and Suellen Rocca, performance/installation artist Shani Crowe, and the city's cultural historian Tim Samuelson. Creative Chicago: An Interview Marathon serves as documentation for this event, including edited transcripts of the interviews, biographies of the participants, photos of the event, and images of the artists' work.

Mature Themes

Book Description

Andrew Durbin's Mature Themes is a hybrid text of poetry, art criticism, and memoir focused on the subject of disingenuity-and what constitutes "personal experience" both online and IRL when to "go deep" in a culture of so many unreliable communication technologies is to resend a text at 3 AM. Throughout the book, Durbin's voice mutates into others in order to uncover the fading specters of meaning buried under the pristine surfaces of art and Hollywood, locating below them the other realities that structure our experience of both.

The Widening Circle

Book Description

In this collection of critical essays the well-known critic Barry Schwabsky reexamines the art produced since the 1960s, demonstrating how the achievements of "high modernism" remain consequential to it, through tensions among representation, abstraction, and pictorial language. With the core of the book focused on Michelangelo Pistoletto and Mel Bochner, Schwabsky also studies the work of emerging artists who also continue to examine modernism's legacies.

Seasons

Book Description

Poetry. "A series of meditations following the sun, SEASONS arrives in mesmerizing waves of observation and reflection. The blue depths of Adnan's inquiry into the nature of Being, Time, knowledge itself crest moment upon moment of quiet revelation, as the passions of history, myth, today, and yesterday rage and subside beneath her watchful eye. 'To think is not to contemplate, it's to witness.' So stanzas wash upon the page's horizon, ever moving toward the mind's encounters with the world. Intimate with ephemera, alert to what's hidden, SEASONS seeks the universe within and beyond the spirit's changeable weather, finding everywhere its center." Megan Pruiett"
