Nas últimas décadas, as sociedades e as nações em todo o mundo, incluindo o nosso País, foram confrontadas com mudanças e desafios sociais, culturais, económico, tecnológico substanciais, e parece haver um consenso geral de que a educação e a formação de professores devem desempenhar um papel fundamental para atender a essas mudanças de forma adequada (Buchberger et al., 200:23). Como agentes de socialização, espera-se que os professores desempenhem um papel fundamental no desenvolvimento de uma nova identidade nos estudantes, que valorize a inclusão e a justiça social num mundo diverso e em constantes mudanças (Albee e Piveral, 2003). A questão da qualidade do ensino a nível da formação de professores deve ser abordada para que os estudantes saiam dos programas de formação de professores não apenas com habilidades de ensino adequadas, mas também apropriadas, que lhes permitam ser professores confiantes e competentes. Os formadores e os educadores transmitem conhecimentos complexos que se preocupam com o desenvolvimento dos estudantes e com o futuro da sociedade. Portanto, a tarefa de capacitar os educadores e os formadores de formadores para fornecerem uma educação de qualidade é uma tarefa gigantesca que depende não apenas dos governos, mas também das iniciativas das diferentes partes envolvidas no processo, incluindo as instituições do Ensino de Base e as do Ensino Superior. Uma vez que os professores constituem a componente mais importante do empreendimento educacional e desempenham um papel crítico no desenvolvimento social, político e económico e na transformação da sociedade, pensamos que o presente estudo constitui um importante contributo na busca de soluções que ajudem a melhorar a qualidade do processo de formação de professores e no processo de ensino em geral.
