A Short History of the English Stage

Book Description

Excerpt from A Short History of the English Stage: From Its Beginnings to the Summer of the Year 1908 In the following pages an attempt has been made to give, within a reasonable compass, a connected history of the development of the English theatre from the days of Miracle Plays to the present time. This is, of course, necessarily involved with the history of the English drama; but I have as far as possible dealt with the drama only as incidental to my subject, which is the history of English theatres and English acting. The compiler of such a book must of necessity be under heavy obligations to previous workers in the same field. I acknowledge gratefully my large indebtedness to Genest, Doran, Fleay, Fitzgerald, Barton Baker, and the numerous authors of monographs on individual theatres or actors. For much of the matter contained in my opening chapter I am indebted to A. W. Pollard's valuable introduction to his edition of English Miracle Plays. In dealing with so large a subject in a comparatively small space, it is obviously impossible to be exhaustive. I have omitted mention of obscure and extinct theatres whose history has no special bearing on that of the stage, and similar considerations will explain why Grand Opera and the Variety Theatres have seemed to me to be outside the scope of the present volume. Stage rights!

Book Description

Stage rights! explores the work and legacy of the first feminist political theatre group of the twentieth century, the Actresses' Franchise League. Formed in 1908 to support the suffrage movement through theatre, the League and its membership opened up new roles for women on stage and off, challenged stereotypes of suffragists and actresses, created new work inspired by the movement and was an integral part of the performative propaganda of the campaign. Introducing new archival material to both suffrage and theatre histories, this book is the first to focus in detail on the Actresses' Franchise League, its membership and its work. The volume is formulated as a historiographically innovative critical biography of the organisation over the fifty years of its activities, and invites a total reassessment of the League within the accepted narratives of the development of political theatre in the UK.
