In the contemporary United States, matters of life and health have become key political concerns. Important to this politics of life is the desire to overcome racial inequalities in health; from heart disease to diabetes, the populations most afflicted by a range of illnesses are racialized minorities. The solutions generally proposed to the problem of racial health disparities have been social and environmental in nature, but in the wake of the mapping of the human genome, genetic thinking has come to have considerable influence on how such inequalities are problematized. Racial Prescriptions explores the politics of dealing with health inequities through targeting pharmaceuticals at specific racial groups based on the idea that they are genetically different. Drawing on the introduction of BiDil to treat heart failure among African Americans, this book contends that while racialized pharmaceuticals are ostensibly about fostering life, they also raise thorny questions concerning the biologization of race, the reproduction of inequality, and the economic exploitation of the racial body. Engaging the concept of biopower in an examination of race, genetics and pharmaceuticals, Racial Prescriptions will appeal to sociologists, anthropologists and scholars of science and technology studies with interests in medicine, health, bioscience, inequality and racial politics.

This Research Topic aims to gather the proceedings of the “IV Latin American Metabolic Profiling Society (LAMPS) Symposium”. Since the first Symposium in 2014 in Lima, Perú, the Latin American Metabolic Profiling Society (LAMPS) has periodically gathered researchers from the region to share their work. Though the discipline is still underdeveloped in Latin America, past meetings held in Rosario, Argentina, in 2016, and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2018, have showcased presentations in all areas of metabolomics. After a hiatus of two years imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the fourth edition of the LAMPS Symposium will be held in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, this coming November (2nd - 4th). As in past editions, the high profile program of the Symposium will provide NMR spectroscopists and mass spectrometrists with a unique opportunity to present their latest results and give younger researchers a space to connect with other colleagues. By sharing new findings and discussing progress in metabolic profiling, this meeting will contribute to a deeper understanding of metabolomics research. To accompany the IV LAMPS Symposium, this Research Topic will not only be an opportunity for those presenting their research at the event to divulge full versions of their work, but will also receive contributions from other researchers in the field as well. While research in Latin America will be the primary focus, submissions that display the impact of metabolomics in all areas of health, nutrition, and agriculture will also be open to Latin American researchers elsewhere around the globe.

Although there are some huge gaps in our current understanding of the role played by cancer stem cells in cancer biology, a growing body of evidence provides strong support for the principal functions of these cells in tumorigenesis. This has represented the potential of cancer stem cells in the development of novel and innovative tools for the treatment of metastatic tumors. This book describes different perspectives of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The approach includes aspects of molecular epidemiology, particularly molecular features that influence the genesis and prognosis of the disease. Some aspects of the prognosis of lymphoblastic leukemias are very detailed, highlighting the use of molecular biology in the early identification of complications that may occur in diseased patients. The authors of the present book conform a Mexican group who identifies the causes of leukemia, and they summarize their experience in research, results and proposals for future studies. A causal model is included in which the authors hypothesized the origin of acute lymphoblastic leukemias, particularly in children. This hypothesis can be useful to better understand other cancers during childhood. This book will help the reader to identify different molecular aspects involved in leukemia, and its relation to the development and evolution of the disease.
