Invisible organisms called microbes are everywhere: in soil, oceans, and snow; in the food we eat and the air we breathe - even inside our bodies. But in Antony van Leeuwenhoek's time, people believed that what they could see with their own eyes was all that existed in the world. Using microscopes of his own design, Antony discovered a living world no one had seen before. How did the simple tradesman - who didn't go to college or speak English or Latin, like all the other scientists - change everyone's minds? Proving that remarkable discoveries can come from the most unexpected people and places, this eye-opening chapter book, illustrated with lively full-color art, celebrates the power of curiosity, ingenuity, and persistence. --

Beyond the Beam follows on directly from the earlier novel and explores the ongoing relationship of Hal and Amanda on their journey around the world in their junk rigged ketch "Kwan Yin". After Amanda`s impulsive insistence on calling at Bimini, where Hal has a strange experience, they then go to the Yucatan, the land of the Mayas, where it is Amanda`s turn to undergo something quite odd and frightening, which causes them to abort the voyage and return to England. The two books, which actually are one, are a tale of past loves and past civilisations and of an ancient house in Devon which exerts an influence on both of them. It is a tale of deep love and where Amanda at last discovers the name of the old man who has haunted her visions and whom she now believes is the spirit of Hal and the Elizabethan sea captain. It ends in a tragic yet upbeat conclusion and with speculations about the well known end of the Mayan Long Count, which came in 2012 and its possible outcome.

Advanced SQL:1999 - Understanding Object-Relational and Other Advanced Features is the practitioner's handbook to the standard's advanced features. It is not a re-presentation of the standard, but rather an authoritative, in-depth guide to its practical application. Like its companion, SQL:1999 - Understanding Relational Language Components, which explained the standard's basic features, this book will show you how to make your applications both effective and standard-compliant. This handy reference has a modular format so you can explore specific topics with ease. It is equally useful to those upgrading from earlier versions of SQL and those with no previous experience. Written by the standard's distinguished editor, Advanced SQL:1999 will complete your knowledge and support your skills like no other book can. - Focuses entirely on the issues that matter to programmers who are connecting applications to databases. - Details SQL:1999's object facilities, including structured user-defined types, typed tables, user-defined routines, and routine invocation. - Examines facilities new to SQL, including those relating to on-line analytical processing (OLAP), management of external data (SQL/MED), and Java support. - Covers the ongoing development of XML support. - Includes appendices that cover the SQL:1999 annexes, a SQL:1999 example using UDTs, status codes, and useful information on the standardization process.
