Allegheny Town was established in 1784 by order of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. By 1840, the tiny wilderness community had grown in size and population to be incorporated as Allegheny City. Throughout the 19th century, Allegheny City became home to immigrants from many European countries who found work in the city's expanding commercial and industrial firms, as well such prominent Americans as Andrew Carnegie, Samuel P. Langley, Mary Cassatt, George Ferris, and Mary Roberts Rinehart. The citizens of Allegheny City's many neighborhoods took great pride in their city's heritage, schools, parks, and congregations. On January 1, 1907, Allegheny City was the third-largest city in Pennsylvania. By the end of that year, the city, as an autonomous municipality, no longer existed as a result of an annexation by Pittsburgh, its sister city across the river. Allegheny City: 1840-1907 documents the short history of this remarkable city.

The intent is not a complete history of American longrifles or a full description of the context in which they were made and used. An overview of their design evolution, history, and distinguishing characteristics is presented as a backdrop to discussion of the gunsmiths of Allegheny and Westmoreland counties, key players in the golden age of American riflemaking. The nicely designed volume measures 11.25x9.25", a perfect shape for the necessarily horizontal, abundant illustrations. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

As one of the seven original townships of Allegheny County, Moon Township has a long and rich history. From the humble home of Joshua, John, and Jacob Meek in what is now Crescent Township to the Stoops House, owned by 19th-century riverboat captain William Stoops, today's Moon Township is a byproduct of these modest roots. Formed in 1788, Moon Township's history crosses borders into neighboring Findlay and Crescent Townships, which once comprised Moon. Today Moon Township is recognized as one of the most bustling and vibrant communities in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. Home to portions of Pittsburgh International Airport, a growing commercial corridor, and hundreds of new families each year, Moon Township is a major player in the future of western Pennsylvania. Through vintage photographs, Moon Township chronicles how this area has changed with the times while preserving as much of its history as possible.

August Wilson is one of America's great playwrights. He lived in Pittsburgh from his birth in 1945 to 1978, when he moved to St. Paul, MN, and later to Seattle, WA. He died in 2005 and is buried in Pittsburgh.Wilson composed 10 plays chronicling the African American experience in each decade of the twentieth century--and he set nine of those plays in Pittsburgh's Hill District. He turned the history of a place into great theater. His plays, including Fences, The Piano Lesson, Two Trains Running, Jitney, Gem of the Ocean, and Radio Golf have become classics of the American stage.August Wilson: Pittsburgh Places in His Life and Plays guides visitors to key sites in the playwright's life and work in the Hill District and beyond. This guidebook enriches the understanding of those who have seen or read his plays, inspires others to do so, and educates all to the importance of respecting, caring for, and preserving the Pittsburgh places that shaped, challenged, and nurtured August Wilson's rich, creative legacy.
