American Housing Production, 1880-2000 presents a concise history of nonfarm housing production, progress, and policy in the United States. This century has been divided into a 14-part chronological structure with irregular time intervals, in contrast to conventional decade time periods. This arrangement is intended to reflect more fully the economic and political forces causing short run movements in housing output. This book treats housing production within a broad economic, demographic, and political context. Special relative measures of housing production, mortgage debt, and household formation have been developed to provide historical perspective over the period covered. Strong emphasis is placed on the growth and improved quality of the housing stock and on the evolution of community facilities essential to safe and sanitary housing, and of a mortgage credit system capable of supporting rising levels of production and home ownership. It analyzes the uneven results of Federal housing legislation, including the effort to assure equal access for all citizens to housing and mortgage markets, and the unfortunate experience of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. A look ahead to future prospects for housing production concludes the book.

Throughout history human beings have formed communities spontaneously with residences constructed haphazardly. Today a new type of community is emerging—one planned from the start regarding housing location, style, and governance. These Community Associations (CAs) have increased in number from 500 in 1960 to 205,000 in 1998. This book explores the issues surrounding this housing innovation and provides a history of community associations and their membership organization, the Community Associations Institute (CAI). The book explores the process of trial and error in the design of CAs and how the CAI was set up to help them work. By 1940, electric lights, dining rooms, and bathrooms were the norm as the traditional working-class home was fast becoming modern—a fact largely missing from the story of domestic innovation and improvement in twentieth-century America, where such benefits seem to count primarily among the upper classes and the post–World War II denizens of suburbia. Examining the physical evidence of America’s working-class houses, Thomas C. Hubka revises our understanding of how widespread domestic improvement transformed the lives of Americans in the modern era. His work, focused on the broad central portion of the housing population, recalibrates longstanding ideas about the nature and development of the “middle class” and its new measure of improvement, “standards of living.” In How the Working-Class Home Became Modern, 1900–1940, Hubka analyzes a period when millions of average Americans saw accelerated improvement in their housing and domestic conditions.
