An Introduction to the Study of the Constitutional and Political History of the States

Book Description

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Constitutional and Political History of the States, Vol. 1 Three years ago, when I first visited the library of the Department of State at Washington, the Constitution of the United States was kept folded up in a little tin box in the lower part of a closet, while the Declaration of Independence, mounted with all elegance, was exposed to the view of all in the central room of the library. It was evident that the former document was an object of interest to very few of the visitors of Washington. But when I was last in the library, I learned that the Constitution also was being mounted in order to be similarly placed upon exhibition, because, as I understood it, there was a more general desire to see it. It seemed to me that this incident is typical of a considerable change which the last few years have seen in our way of looking at American history. Book Description

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Local Constitutional History of the United States, Vol. 1 Since the appearance of Freeman's Comparative Politics the theory of an English local constitution whose origin is coeval with the origin of the race has become familiar to every scholar. Already an extensive monographic literature, every day increasing, bears witness to the high value set upon the study of local institutions. The Constitutional and Political History of the United States, Vol. 1

Book Description

Excerpt from The Constitutional and Political History of the United States, Vol. 1: 1750-1833, State Sovereignty and Slavery I take it to be a good omen for the success of this work that just at this moment an English translation of it is to be offered to the American public. As all the sources I have been able to use, are, without a single exception, printed books well known to every student of American politics, no new facts are to be found in the work, and I even cannot claim that new views of importance have pre sented themselves to my mind. Yet I trust that it will not be considered as lost labor. There are, among the authors who have written on the constitutional law or the politics of the United States, more than one, whom, in all candid ness, I do not pretend to equal in many very important respects. But I venture to assert that among all the works, covering about as large a ground as mine, there is not one to be found which has been written with as much sober ness of mind. And it is not strange that it should be so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Constitution of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2

Book Description

Excerpt from The Constitution of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2: Its History, Application and Construction The Constitution of the United States is one of the great written instruments of the world. Its adoption marked the most advanced progress along the line of representative government which had occurred in history, and its influence has surpassed that of any similar document. Concerning the formation of the Constitution there was long a prevalent misconception. It was not wholly an orig inal creation of those who framed-it. The Colonial State papers, 'the Resolves of Congress, the Articles of Confedera tion and the State Constitutions contained many excellent provisions which were inserted in the greater instrument, while precedents for other provisions were found in the British Constitution. In the manner of arrangement I have followed the divi sion of the Constitution into articles, sections and clauses instead of considering similar provisions together. No attempt has been made to discuss collateral issues, or to criticise the Constitution because it contains too much or too little. Although new problems relating to constitu tional government are demanding consideration, I feel that one may be excused from discussing them in a work which treats of the Constitution as it is.
