Anecdotes and Biographical Sketches (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Anecdotes and Biographical Sketches Among the numerous papers, letters, journals, of the late Duchess of Devonshire which fell into the hands of her executors, were found several small volumes of Anecdotes and Biographical Sketches of Distinguished Persons, which gives them an interest. The Duchess herself was a person of acknowledged talent, and associating with all that were most celebrated at home and abroad, no one could be better qualified than herself in forming a just opinion of the persons she came in contact with, and by most of whom she was loved and admired. Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of a Soldier of Three Wars (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Biographical Sketches and Anecdotes of a Soldier of Three Wars After we unloaded at Albany and started on our return trip we went very slow, only using one horse and not running nights. The forward cabin was used for the horses and the after cabin for a dining-room and sleeping room. For a long distance the canal runs parallel with the Mohawk river, and is very high, sometimes fifty feet above the river. On this occasion, as we were passing through Little Falls, we were just coming out of a lock, when the towline broke and the horse went down the embankment. It killed the horse and nearly killed me. I felt the effects of the fall for years after. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Selected Stories

Book Description

In her preface to Robert Walser's Selected Stories, Susan Sontag describes Walser as "a good-humored, sweet Beckett." The more common comparison is to "a comic Kafka." Both formulations effectively describe the reading experience in these stories: the reader is obviously in the presence of a mind-bending genius, but one characterized by a wry, buoyant voice, as apparently cheerful as it is disturbing. Walser is one of the twentieth century's great modern masters—revered by everyone from Walter Benjamin to Hermann Hesse to W. G. Sebald—and Selected Stories gives the fullest display of his talent. "He is most at home in the mode of short fiction," according to J. M. Coetzee in The New York Review of Books. The stories "show him at his dazzling best."
