In his early childhood he was of a feeble and delicate, or rather sensitive, constitution, although his com plaints never assumed any serious form. His earliest instructions in reading were given at. Home; and, until his tenth year, he was regularly carried with the rest of his family to Greenock, in which town a part of every season was spent.
