Annual Reports Number: President and Treasurer 1928-1929 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Annual Reports Number: President and Treasurer 1928-1929 In the death of Katharine Lee Bates, Wellesley College suffers an immeasurable loss. From the time of her entrance as freshman to the day of her death as Professor Emeritus, her life was interwoven with the college fabric, and her distinctive individuality made itself felt in all her relationships, as student, instructor, professor. Possessing great strength of character, imaginative insight, resolute idealism, she gave her powers unsparingly to the service of the College and of her friends. As head, for many years, of the English Literature Department, she brought to her office productive scholarship, high standards, intellectual and moral, and unwearied patience in the search for truth. Her mind had the rare combination of delicate intuition with great power of concentration, and it constantly touched with quickening power the minds of her students and her colleagues. She lent to academic life the pungency of wit, the gentleness of humor and of kindliest sympathy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Annual Report of the President and Treasurer to the Trustees

Book Description

Excerpt from Annual Report of the President and Treasurer to the Trustees: With Accompanying Documents for the Year Ending June 30, 1928 While in recording the progress and the achievements of Columbia University and its notable company of scholars, it is judicious to avoid the use of superlatives, yet it will not be easy to find another year since the Charter of King's College passed the seals on October 31, 1754, when so many matters of large importance are to be recorded and when so many long debated problems have achieved solution. Forces and ideas long at work have been able during this year to find their wished-for expression in institutional life. Annual Reports Number President and Treasurer

Book Description

Excerpt from Annual Reports Number President and Treasurer: 1932-1933 It is not inappropriate to mention here the dedication of the tablet to Miss Katharine Lee Bates as the author of America the Beautiful, unveiled in the F enway on June 10. The memorial was presented to the City of Boston by a committee composed of friends and admirers of Miss Bates, with the late Gamaliel Bradford as chairman. The money collected by this committee came from people representing many states and many walks of life - educators, authors, publicists, and school - children. A replica of this tablet was purchased by Colorado friends of Miss Bates and is placed in the chapel of Colorado College. It was in Colorado that Miss Bates received her inspiration for this song, which is fast becoming, as it deserves to be, the national hymn of the United States of America. At the request of the trustees, the President made a tour of some of the Wellesley Clubs of the Far West, including St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Tacoma. It was a great satisfaction to find so many loyal alumnae who have made enviable places for themselves in their communities. Annual Reports, President and Treasurer, 1924-1926 (Classic Reprint)

Book Description

Excerpt from Annual Reports, President and Treasurer, 1924-1926 But if we would thus record the memory of these, her valiant and arduous years as our physician, we would likewise record our abiding sense of the woman who was never content to live without loveliness. Graciously endowed as she was by nature with beauty of being, she enhanced it by her own creative love for all things of life and health, for color, for light, for music. Hers was a fresh and radiant presence, a self constantly revitalized by vigorous outdoor hours, by keen winds, by birds, by the gardens and flowers that bloomed inevitably wherever Dr. Raymond lived her personal life. In her a strong, sane, beautiful womanhood was richly revealed. In her we have lost one who not only healed but who made us rich by her being. In her, our comrade and our friend, we have lost what will not soon be found again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
