For as long as Mexicans have emigrated to the United States they have responded creatively to the challenges of making a new home. But although historical, sociological, and other aspects of Mexican immigration have been widely studied, its cultural and artistic manifestations have been largely overlooked by scholars—even though Mexico has produced the greatest number of cultural works inspired by the immigration process. And recently Chicana/o artists have addressed immigration as a central theme in their cultural productions and motifs. Culture across Borders is the first and only book-length study to analyze a wide range of cultural manifestations of the immigration experience, including art, literature, cinema, corridos, and humor. It shows how Mexican immigrants have been depicted in popular culture both in Mexico and the United States—and how Mexican and Chicano/Chicana artists, intellectuals, and others have used artistic means to protest the unjust treatment of immigrants by U.S. authorities. Established and upcoming scholars from both sides of the border contribute their expertise in art history, literary criticism, history, cultural studies, and other fields, capturing the many facets of the immigrant experience in popular culture. Topics include the difference between Chicano/a and Mexican representation of immigration; how films dealing with immigrants are treated differently by Mexican, Chicano, and Hollywood producers; the rich literary and artistic production on immigration themes; and the significance of immigration in Chicano jokes. As a first step in addressing the cultural dimensions of Mexican immigration to the United States, this book captures how the immigration process has inspired powerful creative responses on both sides of the border.

This is the first comprehensive and authoritative survey of an important and increasingly popular field. Because each of the contributors is an expert on his or her own national art, it is also the first to present a genuinely Latin American viewpoint. 17 scholars, critics and curators provide an exciting and challenging new assessment of twentieth-century Latin American art. The wider public and scholars alike will welcome the full treatment of the different histories and cultural traditions that have given each country its own character. Major artists such as Wifredo Lam, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Fernando Botero are seen in a wider context, and the exploration of the rich and important heritage of previously overlooked countries such as Ecuador, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Paraguay and Bolivia will be a revelation to many. Springing from complex cultural roots, Latin American art is fresh, varied and often startling in its originality. Its vast range and astonishing qualities are represented here in over 300 outstanding images.

"Marina Abramovic (born 1946) is one of the foremost contemporary performance artists. She has used her body and personal history both as a social metaphor and as a material for her work. This publication examines the whole range of her large production to date and establishes the common ground between her installations, videos, performances and objects. A series of articles written by leading art critics and specialists discuss the earliest paintings, sound installations and performances made in Yugoslavia during the 1960s and early 1970s; the years of collaborative performances with Ulay (1976-88); the videos, made both collaboratively and singly throughout her career; the so-called transitional objects which demand the participation of the viewer in order for them to be activated (1988-); the new, baroque and violently "theatrical" meta-performances Biography (1992) and Delusional (1994) and, most recently, the power objects, which indicate a new departure."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. "Based on a multimedia installation by Francis Alys, The Last Clown, tells the story of an unplanned meeting between a stroller and dog. While exploring randomness, Francis Alys reflects on the role of laughter and trickery in the creative process as well as on the multiple territories occupied by the artist. His work is at once enigmatic and ironic, grave and light. By way of the several forms in the artistic process, he also explores the role of the artist, and looks at the parameters that could define an artistic practice of today. Essay by Michele Theriault."
