DeLaine is embarking on an intense and surprising journey through the junior high jungle of 8th-grade. Now an upperclassman of the newly minted and rebuilt Milam Junior High, she, along with her best friend, Bailey Rains, encounter many new, wonderful and sometimes heartbreaking lessons in life. DeLaine's new life seems to begin almost the minute she walks into the doors of her school! Unbelievably, she is no longer invisible or it seems a peasant, in the school's social hierarchy! DeLaine is finding that being part of the popular crowd is attainable to someone like her. She can't believe her luck and how different her days as an 8th-grader compare to her miserable days as a 6th-grader. With her unusual year being a 7th-grader at Samson High School over, she is free to explore in a completely different group of friends than what she has ever known. Her new group of friends includes Jax Garrett as an upstanding member in their midst. DeLaine's crush from 6th-grade seems to confound her as much as Kevin Strong. Freshman, Kevin, is no longer in the same school with DeLaine and she feels his absence even with the attention she's receiving from cute cowboy, Jax! Her home life continues to be a roller coaster ride of insanity with occasional peeks of hope sprinkled throughout. Her step-mother, Clarice, seems to be happy with the caliber of friends DeLaine now has, which makes life a bit more bearable. She had hopes that since she would no longer be in the high school, her step-brother, Geoffrey would calm down as much as his mother has towards DeLaine, but he continues to run hot and cold no matter what she does in regards to his best friend Kevin Strong. DeLaine's life takes an unexpected twist half-way through her school year and she learns what true heartbreak is after receiving devastating news! How will she survive the huge changes coming into her life?

All of Europe was ablaze when Clair M. Callan was born in 1940 as World War II raged across the continent. Although her home in Sandycove in neutral Ireland was peaceful and safe, the war had a great effect on her and her family. In Standing My Ground, Callan provides insight into the shaping of her life. This memoir spans the arc of Callan's life--seven decades--as a school girl in Ireland, a wife, mother, doctor, and eventually a business executive in America. Callan recounts how she partially cracked the glass ceiling to upper management at a time when it seemed impenetrable to women in the workplace world. While employed in different medical environments she created innovative approaches to healthcare and improved patient safety and quality. Starting with her early years, a time of privation during World War II in Ireland, through an uncertain move to America during Vietnam, it ends in an era of plenty in Illinois in the twenty-first century. Standing My Ground offers practical lessons from her life, illustrating how one can advance in a competitive environment, no matter what one's sex.

The author was born and raised in a small West Virginia town among the hills and mountains she so loves. Her family tree, however, has very deeply planted roots in the Carolinas of the South. Her Great Grandmother lived to be over ninety years old, but never left the small city where she raised her family in Northern North Carolina. Her Grandmother moved to Western West Virginia in the roaring 20s and settled down in a small town near the Kentucky border, at the point where the Big Sandy River flows into the Great Ohio River. The author was later born in the same area and remains there to this day. The author has been afforded the opportunity of raising three wonderful children, who all have left the area, other than one son, who remains. The two female children have provided her with three marvelous grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. The authors eldest granddaughter and great granddaughter has returned and established their abode in the same geographical area. The author lives with her husband of forty-five years, and looks forward to completing their earthly lifetime together.
