Assessing Soldier Individual Differences to Enable Tailored Training

"The operational tempo of the United States Army has increased dramatically, placing a premium upon quality of training. For decades researchers have explored the extent to which training quality can be improved by tailoring training, defined as assessing learning-relevant individual differences and assigning learners to optimal learning conditions based on those differences. Before informed tailored training in U.S. Army institutional settings can take place, researchers must know what individual differences (IDs) are related to course performance. Instructors from the Warrant Officer Candidate School (WOCS) at Fort Rucker, Alabama, were interviewed to determine what IDs, in their experience, predict academic success in the WOCS course. Based on those interviews, three IDs dimensions (initiative, attention to detail, and metacognition) were chosen. Other IDs were selected by the research team on the basis of hypothesized relationships between experience and course demands. A set of instruments measuring those IDs as well as demographic information was constructed and given to the instructors to review. Upon instructor approval, the packet was administered to a 5-week and a 7-week WOCS class (total n=157). The student responses were then statistically compared with end of course grades to determine the predictive validity of the instruments. For the 5-week class, only one demographic variable and none of the instructor-provided IDs correlated with academic performance. For the 7-week class, two of the demographic items and two of the instructor-provided IDs predicted academic performance. However, correlations between the predictor and criterion variables would have to be stronger to serve as a basis for tailoring training. On the other hand, the demographic items are easy to administer and the gain in prediction may be judged worth the effort. Possible reasons for the moderate predictive power of the individual differences are proposed."--DTIC.

The resulting knowledge can be used to design rapid, deployable fitness-for-duty measures, alter training protocols, and assess training efficacy in order to enable decision-makers to act at peak ability during high operations tempo. In addition, dual-use applications of resulting knowledge and technology extend well into the civilian sector, to law-enforcement officers, healthcare professionals, and emergency responders. The book differs from many previous human factors publications by presenting state-of-the-art neuroscience data in a format that is comprehensible and informative for readers of diverse backgrounds. It not only details human behaviors and perception, but also provides concise brain imagery and physiological findings to support its conclusions. The U.S. military does not believe its soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines should be engaged in combat with adversaries on a "level playing field." Our combat individuals enter engagements to win. To that end, the United States has used its technical prowess and industrial capability to develop decisive weapons that overmatch those of potential enemies. 2000 Assessment of the Office of Naval Research's Marine Corps Science and Technology Program

This review of the Science and Technology (S&T) program of the Office of Naval Research's (ONR's) Expeditionary Warfare Operations Technology Division, Code 353, comes at a time of considerable change in the Marine Corps and in ONR, which are currently in the midst of significant transitions. The Marine Corps is making plans to equip and train for engaging in a new style of warfare known as Operational Maneuver From the Sea (OMFTS) and for performing a wide variety of missions in urban settings, ranging from humanitarian assistance to combat and mixes of these suggested by the term three-block war. During 1999, ONR assumed management of that portion of the Marine Corps S&T program that had not been assigned several years earlier to the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory (MCWL). In 2002, control of most of ONR's advanced development funding (6.3), and of much of its exploratory development funding (6.2), will move from ONR's line divisions, of which Code 353 is one of many, to 12 new program offices, each dedicated to demonstrating technologies for future naval capabilities (FNCs). Given these changes, it is not surprising that some of the projects inherited recently by ONR, and assessed by the Committee for the Review of ONR's Marine Corps Science and Technology Program under the auspices of the Naval Studies Board of the National Research Council, differed from the customary ONR project and were more akin to preacquisition or acquisition support than to S&T. It is also not surprising that Code 353 could not articulate its plans for future investments clearly and concisely, given the current uncertainty about the content of and funding level for FNCs. The Marine Corps S&T program supports the five imperatives for technology advancement that the Marine Corps Combat Development Command (MCCDC) has identified as prerequisites for the transition to OMFTS: maneuver, firepower, logistics, training and education, and command and control. The committee supports investment in these areas and, in the report's discussions and recommendations, follows the five imperatives.

The authoring tools have been designed to lower costs and entry skills needed to author ITSs and our research continues to seek and discover ways to enhance the adaptiveness of ITSs to support self-regulated learning (SRL). This year marks the sixth year of GIFT Symposia and we accepted 30 papers for publication in this year’s proceedings.
