The educational system of the Netherlands is described, and placement recommendations concerning students who want to study in the United States are presented. After a consideration of the legal and financial bases of Dutch education and the country's educational structure, the various educational levels and types of schooling are discussed: preprimary, primary, and special education; secondary education; higher vocational education; teacher education; nursing education; university education; and international education. Guidelines are included on: stratification in Dutch education, Dutch credentials, examinations, grading practices, and conversion to U.S. units of credit. Placement recommendations are provided for each level/type of schooling. Appendices include a list of higher education institutions that offer programs recognized by the government as of 1983. In addition to the address, each institution is identified by educational sector and by the types of programs offered. Reproductions of sample transcripts, diplomas, and other credentials are also appended, along with a list of abbreviations and acronyms, a glossary, a list of references, and an index. (SW)

How did Jews in the Netherlands view themselves and how were they viewed by others? This is the single theme around which the twenty-five essays in this volume, written by scholars from the Netherlands, Israel and other countries, revolve. The studies encompass a variety of topics and periods, from the beginning of the Jewish settlement in the Dutch Republic through the Shoah and its aftermath. They include examinations of the Sephardi Jews in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Jews in the periods of Emancipation and Enlightenment, social and cultural encounters between Jews and non-Jews throughout the ages, the image of the Jew in Dutch literature in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the churches' attitudes toward Jews. Also highlighted are the second World War and its consequences, Dutch Jews in Israel and Israelis in the contemporary Netherlands.

Since the beginning of the economic crisis of the 1980s considerable research has been dedicated to the study of the unemployment problem. Nevertheless, the phenomenon has not become fully understood, nor are its consequences adequately prevented. In this important new volume, On the Mysteries of Unemployment, economists and social scientists come together to offer the reader the latest insights on unemployment and policies regarding unemployment from the perspectives of both disciplines. On the Mysteries of Unemployment contains four main sections. Part One provides an introductory chapter and general overview. Part Two contains rich contributions that provide new insights from an economic science perspective, while Part Three offers a balanced view from social scientists. The final section is devoted to the examination of policy issues concerning unemployment. This volume, unique in its field, will be of interest to researchers, students, politicians and policy-makers.
